Hello families,

  • Welcome to Week 8 in Grade 5!
  • Thank you for all of your help supporting your child to be on time and dressed in

full uniform. As a friendly reminder, crocs are not allowed. In addition, navy and

khaki bottoms are allowed only. Black leggings, grey sweatpants, white pants, etc. are not permitted. I will send emails daily to families when students are not in compliance with the school uniform. Thank you for your cooperation. I have seen an improvement in school uniform compliance, and I thank you for your commitment.

  • Thank you to the families who attended Back To School Night on Monday, 9/29/25.

It was a pleasure to meet with you, and I appreciate your dedication to your child’s education. I

have included a link for all families to view from Back To School Night

in this newsletter.

  • We participated in Fire Prevention/Fire Safety last week with the Perth Amboy Fire Department.

Hats were distributed to each child. The students were eager to ask questions to our firefighters.

  • Happy Birthday, Jeanlu on 10/29!
  • Happy Birthday, Jadiel on 10/30!

  • Trunk or Treat will take place on Wednesday, 10/29 from 5PM-6PM. Tickets cost $1 for each Edward J. Patten student. Please return your RSVP forms (sent home on 10/17) with your money attached. Thank you!

This week, we are learning:

    • Math: Students decompose whole numbers into parts to match equal-sharing problems. They move from using concrete objects to drawing models to represent each sharing situation, and write division equations to match. As they study each division equation, students notice the pattern that the dividend matches the numerator and the divisor matches the denominator. They determine that division equations can be represented with fractions. This lesson introduces the academic verb conclude.

    • Reading: Students will analyze a character’s feelings so they can explain how or what that character has changed. They know they have it when they can use the character’s feelings in the text to explain how and why the character has changed.

    • Science: Science will take place in Marking Periods 2 and 3.

    • Social Studies: Social Studies will take place in Marking Periods 1 and 4. Hispanic Heritage Month takes place from 9/15 to 10/15. This week, we will identify, organize, and analyze key facts about eight early European explorers who led expeditions to the Americas.

    • Writing: Students will examine ways that authors end their stories so they can add an effective ending to their personal narrative. They know they have it when they can rewrite their ending with a strategy that they learned.
