Introduction.
What is an equation ?
An equation is an equality containing one or more variables.
The objective of this project is to explain how to use multiplicative inverse, addition property of equality, and subtraction property of equality. It will also demonstrate conceptual knowledge of writing and solving equations.
Equation #1.
Steps to solve Equation #2
Step 1: 4x=⅖
step 2: 4/4x=2/5X4 (use the multiplicative inverse.)
step 3: x=8/20 reduce 8/20 by 4
step 4: x=⅖ and you get your answer.
Steps to solve equation #2
step 1: x - ¼ = ⅖ use the addition property of equality.
add ¼ to - ¼ and 2/5 .
step 2: find the common denominator which is 20.
step 3: add 5/20 and 8/20 and you get 13/20
Your answer is x = 13/20
Equation #2.
Equation #3
15 - 2/3 x = 20. Solve this equation by using the subtraction property of equality. Step 1: Subtract 15 from 15 and 20.
15 - 2/3x = 20
-15 -15
and you have the equation: -2/3x = 5
Step 2: next you divide -⅔ from ⅔ and 5
and you get x = -15/2
Step 3: change the -15/2 to a mixed number by dividing the stop by the bottom and you get x = -7 ½.
Equation #4
Steps to solve equation. 5 - 2(x - 3) = -23
step 1: 5 - 2( x-3) = -23 use distributive property. give x and -3 a -2
5 + 2x + 6 = -23
Step 2: add 5 and 6 and you will get the equation 11 + 2x = -23
Step 3: use the addition property of equality and add 11 to 11 and -23 and you get -34. 2x = -34
step 4: divide -34 and 2 by 2.
your answer is x = -17
Writing Equations.
Bill wants to paint his room. He can get services from Paul’s Paint for $35 an hour plus $65 for the paint, or he can get service from Yolanda’s House Paint for $55 an hour plus $45 for the paint. How many hours will it take for them to cost the same?
equation: 35h + 65 = 55h + 45
step 1: subtract 35h from 55h. you get 65 = 20h + 45
step 2: use the subtraction property of equality and subtract 45 from 45 and 65 and you get 20h = 20
step 3: next divide by 20, and you get x = 1 hour.
Correct the following in this presentation:
Slide 3: ¼ x 4x = ⅖ x ¼
Slide 5: Use “multiplicative inverse” in your explanation by multiplying by the inverse (-3/2) instead of dividing by -⅔ ; “stop” should be “top”
Slide 6: When using the distributive property you should get 5 - 2x + 6; Use “division property of equality” in your explanation of step 4
