Goals of MakeHaven

Mission: Be a community makerspace that educates and empowers people by facilitating independent interest-driven projects, hands-on experiences and access to technology.

Which means we...

  • Empower by removing mystery behind technology & tools.
  • Help people achieve what they could not alone.
  • Give people a taste of the future.

6 of 34

Facilitator

a person who facilitates, inspires and empowers members of the MakeHaven community to movement on acts of making which were previously daunting. Helps turn ideas into reality. Move people out of their comfort zone to achieve projects they could not do alone.

7 of 34

Limits to Obligation

Right and responsibility to say no to anything you don’t want to do or that makes you feel uncomfortable.

For example: if a member asks you to help with lifting something heavy, you have no obligation to do so. Protect yourself.

Facilitators are here to help members learn tools and skills, not to do the work for them.

Work with them, not for them. If they want to have someone else do it, they can post it as a job on MakeHaven’s slack channel for a member to claim.

8 of 34

Role: Engage

  • Help organize and participate in at least 1 community activity related to your focus area per 6 month appointment.
  • Ensure that people from every skill level and background are encouraged and empowered to take part in your area.

How?

  • Check Slack daily
  • Post an inspiring photo (ideally) and/or message about what went on during your facilitator hours to your area channel(s), or if your hours were quiet, post a project, idea, or resource note on Slack (5 minutes)

Hold Each Other Accountable

We are collectively responsible for the culture of the community.

If you witness an facilitator or member doing something potentially inappropriate, consider intervening if appropriate or talk with offender after.

Any member can give any kind of feedback at makehaven.org/feedback

Staff are available to assist with problem solving.

  • Regularly inspect tools and equipment for your focus area. Report or maintain as necessary.

How?

  • Supply request clipboard in woodshop window, or message on Slack/email Kate

16 of 34

Role: Offer Support

  • Support members using and learning about various pieces of equipment.

TIP: Be aware that we are a place opening up technology to as many people as possible. Understand that it might be uncomfortable for someone to be singled out for their difference, even in a positive light.

  • You have a lot of knowledge but be sure not to talk too much at people.

Key Question: Am I helping this person or group discover and explore themselves?

17 of 34

Role: Develop Leadership

  • Identify others who can take on a volunteer role. Coach them and make a recommendation for who is the next facilitator following your tenure.

Question: What Makes a Good facilitator?

Consider what makes a good facilitator. Start taking to people about their interest level before your 6 month term ends.

Support for Facilitators

Equipment Purchase - We will support facilitators in improving the areas where there is member support. The basic process is to add to wish list, and encourage member feedback. It is then reviewed by staff with consultation of facilitator, and if approved we work on finding the best deal.

Event Support - If you hold a special member or prospective member event we will put reasonable resources to supplies and snacks. Check with staff.

First aid training - Free training to give life saving skills.
