🇫🇷 Mini Lesson: Formal and informal French (Tu vs. vous)

🗣️ What It Means

In French, you can be said two ways:

• tu → informal “you” (singular)
• vous → formal “you” or plural “you all”

They both mean you, but choosing the right one shows respect and politeness.

💬 When to Use “tu”

Use tu with:

• friends
• family
• classmates
• children
• pets

✅ Examples:

• Salut, tu vas bien ? → Hi, how are you?
• Tu as un frère ? → Do you have a brother?

🎩 When to Use “vous”

Use vous with:

• adults you don’t know
• teachers or bosses
• store clerks, waiters
• doctors or other professionals

✅ Examples:

• Bonjour Madame, vous allez bien ? → Hello Ma’am, how are you?
• Vous parlez anglais ? → Do you speak English?

👥 Singular vs. Plural

Even with friends, if you’re talking to more than one person, use vous.

Example:

• Vous allez au cinéma ? → Are you (all) going to the movies?
