ThinkCERCA Lesson: A Raisin in the Sun: Act I, Scene I

In Act I, Scene I, how do the unique perspectives and points of view of the main characters begin to contribute to the conflicts between them?

Lorraine Hansberry’s famous play, A Raisin in the Sun, was the first play produced on Broadway by a Black woman. This important work is based on the real experiences of racial discrimination faced by Hansberry’s own family in 1940s and 50s Chicago. Read Act I, Scene I, to meet the members of the Younger family, who have just learned that they will be receiving a large sum of money from a family member’s life insurance and must now decide what to do with it.
