Strategic Vertical AI experience for students: With our High school and elementary schools we have created a strategic vertical experience for students to ensure that students experience a seamless transition from one level to another. We do this using our AI Learning Continuum, clubs and organizations and collaborating with our cluster schools.
AKS Based- What are we teaching? Students are being taught the same AKS as all GCPS middle school, but though the lens of AI. All teachers use the AI learning framework to find authentic applications of AI and Future Ready skills in their instruction.
AI Challenges- Students and staff participate in AI Challenges during homeroom. The challenges vary by grade level but put a focus on various components of the AI learning framework.
Clubs and Organizations: We also provide opportunities for our students to experience AI readiness skills in Clubs and Organizations. Robotics club completes with their Vex Robots after building them. Drone Team was started last with a grant from Paul Duke. We have now created a vertical continuum in our cluster that with the end goal of our students in HS getting their FAA license.

Grading Scale

-The grading scale has changed with the removal of the “D” which previously represented a score from 70 -73. Those score points are replaced by a “C”.

New Grading Categories:

AKS Progress will represent classwork performance and quizzes. These are formative assessments that check students’ progress towards mastery of skills and content.
AKS Mastery will represent summative tests, projects, and major writing pieces. These grade represent a students’ mastery of particular skills and standards.
Common Formative Assessments are district developed, district-wide assessments given at the end of instructional units. These are short checks for understanding. The results impact instructional decisions..
Milestones Benchmarks are given to students in courses that are assessed on the Georgia Milestones. They are given in December and March. Results provide predictive progress towards skills and standards students will be tested on when they take the Milestones in the April. (Includes all 8th grade courses, and 6th and 7h grade math and language arts.)
Final Exams are district developed end-of-semester exams given to students in courses that are NOT assessed on the Georgia Milestones. (Includes 6th and 7th grade Social Studies and Science.)

Grade Change: Why was the “D” dropped? The Georgia Student Finance Commission calculates GPA for HOPE Scholarship using the grading scale that the district has in place. Many districts in the state do not use a ‘D’, including most of the metro area districts. By having a ‘D’ on our grading scale our students were at a disadvantage compared to other students in the state when it came to calculating GPA for HOPE Scholarship.

GCPS uses the numeric GPA to calculate rank in class, so removing the D had no impact on our day to day operations…it did however benefit our students.
