Introduction
Tyvern is one of the many places on the world of Tarran, but not one of the places you would want to live in. Occupied by bloodthirsty vampires and religious Catholics, they are an interesting group.
Etymology
Tyvern in the known language means Falcon, a name that perhaps references the falconry sport and the amount of falcons flying around above Tyvern.
History
Long ago, settlers came to Tyvern and created homes there. They became devoted to God, and God told them where they could find armor and crowned them a royal line. Many years later, the royal line was broken by a coup, and God cursed the new king and his descendants with sharp teeth and a lust for animal blood. A few centuries later, this curse was all over, and the new royal line started drinking human blood. The citizens banished the king and his descendants from the kingdom, and embraced God’s will again. Many years later, the king’s son, who had gained the gift of longevity started sacrificing citizens to create a portal to the world known as Instholdé, land of vampires. When an Archangel tried to intervene, they were killed, and the son, now the Vampire King, became immortal, immune to all things that would kill vampires. Many years later, the land of Instholdé became a prospering land, and sprouted up eight vampire clans. A few years later, the humans attacked Instholdé and burned down their forest, but they were all slain in the process.
People
Species
There are two main species in Tyvern, the Vampires and the Humans. There are eight subspecies of vampires, each one a clan. Firefly vampires can glow in the dark, but that gives away their hiding place, and they can survive in the light. Hyena Vampires laugh wildly after they bite someone and can smell their prey. The Owl Clan has wings that are incredibly loud. The Spider Clan has eight arms that mess with their weight and can climb along walls. The Wolf Clan are sort of more like werewolves, being able to shift into half wolves. The Cougar Clan is incredibly stealthy but have a revealing smell that only animals can smell. The Moths have bright white wings and can survive in the light. The Bats can only eat small insects and blood and have wings. The Cockroaches have natural armor and a disgusting stench. Vampires live for 255 years, a human year is three times a vampire year. When they are bitten, they stay the age they are but start aging slower. Vampires can teleport short distances, run incredibly fast, paralyze people by making eye contact, and bite people along the neck to make them Vampires. Powerful vampires can manipulate shadows to cover themselves, and can make shadows solid and sharp, can smell blood and fear. Never gets tired. Vampires can be slain by Lunar Flowers, half the time a stake to the heart works, and most Vampires are blinded by light and killed by the sun, except Firefly and Moth Vampires. They all serve the Vampire King. The cure to becoming a Vampire is bathing in holy water, but holy water can only be created by humans and humans are too terrified of Vampires to try it. Vampires are incapable of having children, and can only create more Vampires by biting people. The people who have been bitten by a Vampire are considered their children.
Ethnic Groups
There are five main ethnic groups of humans, dark skinned humans, light skinned humans, light brown skinned humans, this world’s version of Asians, and pale skinned humans. These people all share traditions, but they sometimes consider themselves different due to the ones without light skin being used as workers in the ancient days. The dark skinned ones are generally stronger and more powerful. When people who don’t have light skin become vampires, their skin becomes sickly.
Geography
Settlements
There are many settlements in Tyvern, most of which are cities and towns. There are a few villages as well. As the territory outside of Tyvern is occupied, Tyvern has no settlements outside of the country.
Provinces
There are eight sections of Tyvern, each one named after a certain jewel and Order. Each order protects their province with their lives from the Vampires. Most of the Provinces look fairly similar.
Climate
Tyvern is cold during the summer, and also cold during the winter, but not that cold. It has a few months of rainfall, and the climate never gets very hot. During the nights, it can get incredibly cold.
Buildings
The buildings in Tyvern are all made out of stone due to the many quarries in Tyvern and to protect against the Vampires. There are many churches, and peasant houses are fairly weakly built but still made out of stone. The villages have a bit of a gothic style, and sometimes have pools of blood on the streets due to the Vampires, but the cities and towns are well fortified, with walls and such.
Diplomatics
Alliances
Tyvern has an alliance with the countries surrounding them, to protect them from the Vampires in exchange for tools for protection, like steel, swords, and stone. They have no official alliances.
Systems
Government
There are eight Orders in Tyvern. The Ruby Order, the Sapphire Order, the Emerald Order, the Agate Order, the Diamond Order, the Amethyst Order, the Onyx Order, and the Amber Order. The government consists of high ranking officials in these Orders. There is a council of eight of all the leaders of these Orders, and the succession of the Order goes onto the Order’s strongest member. Although female people are invited into the Orders, most of the leaders are male due to the patriarchal society and the unfair bodily advantage of males.
Laws
There are many laws in Tyvern, but most of them forbid connections with Vampires and sparing Vampires. There are laws against attacking Knights and members of the Orders. There are laws against attacking innocent citizens, stealing, and murder. There are laws about burning books like the Holy Bible and sexually assaulting people.
Economy
The economy of Tyvern is like many other countries of that time, except they have many trade routes with other countries. Vampire repelling plants are incredibly valuable, and weapons are also valuable. The food in Tyvern is plentiful, so that is fairly cheap, but defenses and houses are expensive.
Order Coin
There are eight Order Coins, each one worth a certain number. Ruby Coins are worth 100, Agate Coins are worth 1, Diamond Coins are worth 50, Sapphire coins 25, Emerald Coins 20, Onyx Coins 5, Amethyst Coins 10, Amber Coins 15. These coins are not made out of the materials they are named after, but they are the same color as these materials, made by cheap jewels and occasionally wood. They are easy to fabricate, but there is a law against fabricating them.
Education
The education of Tyvern is mostly focused on survival tactics. There are various schools for the harder professions, like being a Knight or a Priest, but people who want to be regular jobs like a lumberjack or seamstress are trained by the local people of that job or their parents. It is their parent’s jobs to teach them history and survival tactics, and basic math and writing. The texts in Tyvern are mainly religious, but there are a few history books and stories.
Military
The eight Orders also serve as a military, each one being trained in fighting and survival. They have no wars against other countries, only the Vampires. The Orders are trained in various techniques like ways to kill Vampires, archery, sword fighting, and fighting in armor. The military techniques of Tyvern involve mainly defense and shield walls.
Technology
Because of the Vampires, people haven’t been able to achieve creating guns, and guns wouldn’t do anything to vampires. They mostly have swords, armor, and arrows, and also shields.
Culture
Languages
There are two main languages in Tyvern. Vampiric and Tyvernian. Tyvernian is a soft language with many vowels and a soft nature, and also fairly gendered. Vampiric is rough and harsh language with many words for anger and kill, and few words for help.
Food
The Tyvern food experience is incredibly unique, with much cheese and meat, like pork and sausage. There are leaves of cabbage, and peppers and dumplings, and the cheese is made of sheep milk.
Fashion
The Tyvernians regularly wear clothing with loose sleeves made out of soft sheep wool, and the pants tend to be made out of black cloth. People tend to wear black and red clothing so if things get bloody, nobody will notice. The footwear of Tyvern is black sandals, and sometimes vests made out of sheepskin. Male and female people wear the same things, as both males and females work in peasant jobs. The higher ups tend to wear dyed black cotton shirts, chainmail armor, and coats.
Music
Tyvernian music is usually played by the violin, and tend to be folk songs that contain stories, ballads of Knights and heroes, and lullabies. Tyvernians also sometimes play the panpipes.
Religion/Myths/Legends
The religion of Tyvern is Christian, Vampiric Christian, a type without any Jesus and with no devil. Vampires are seen as the devil, and some myths involve the myth of Stefan and Gabriella, Stefan being the first vampire to drink human blood. There is also the myth of Saint Ambrose and the usurper, his brother King Damian, the first Vampire, cursed by God.
Traditions
Most Tyvernian traditions involve protection against Vampires. Some traditions involve seasoning food with plants that repel vampires, which works, chewing on Golden Cross, a plant that makes you immune to vampire bites, which works, bowing to Knights as they pass, which does not work, and leaving buckets of milk on their rooftops to dump on Vampires, which does not work.
