Food for Thought: All About Indian Food!

India is responsible for some of the ingredients and eating lifestyles used all around the world! For example, the idea for vegetarianism was born in India out of religious reasons and is practiced all around the world today. An extremely popular Indian dish is tandoori chicken, chicken cooked in a hot clay oven called a tandoor. Delicious breads like chapati, shaped like a pancake and made with special flour, also come from India. Another favorite Indian snack is Bhel Puri, made with puffed rice, crispy noodles, and potatoes and served with sweet, sour, and spicy sauces.

Indian Animals!

India is home to famous animals like the King Cobra, an extremely dangerous venomous snake, the Indian elephant, weighing nearly 12,000 pounds, and the Bengal tiger, which is in extreme danger of extinction-- there are only about 5,000 tigers left in the world.

  • Do you know what a Cummerbund is? It is a kind of cloth worn around the waist, often worn with tuxedos. It comes from India!

  • Another famous kind of Indian clothing is the Sari. Saris are long pieces of cloth made from beautiful fabrics. Women wrap them around their waists and drape them over their shoulders.
