Class participation is vital to passing this course. You will have reading assignments and assessments throughout. All grades are averaged together and can be accessed on Skyward.

If you ever have a question about a grade, please feel free to ask me. I try to send home progress reports regularly to keep you informed.

Read 180 Course Description

Read 180 by Scholastic is a class designed for students who want to improve and increase their reading ability. READ 180 is designed to meet individual needs in reading and writing skills. In addition, students learn a variety of strategies for both reading and learning.

Helpful Information:

READ 180 is designed to help older struggling readers become more successful in life. However, students who are NOT struggling readers may find this course helpful in order to improve reading and comprehension skills. Even though this class is considered an English class, the skills taught and practiced in this class will/can be used in all aspects of school and life

Read 180 Class Set-Up

1. Whole Group –Direct instruction to the group about a specific topic

2. Rotations

Group One – small group, direct instruction based on individual needs

Group Two – Read 180 Software – intensive, individualized needs

Group Three – Reading/Writing skills practice (Sustained, Silent reading)

3. Whole Group Wrap-up- Short review/discussion on what we’ve covered

Grading Model

Whole Group Work (25% of grade) – These activities include bellwork, daily participation points, whole group activities, any class projects, and participating in outside reading activities.

Small Group Work (25% of grade) – This grade also consists of Real Book activities, but it also includes written essays, individual instruction in weakness areas, Writer’s Notebook entries, skills tests, and any small group projects.

Scholastic READ 180 Software (25% of grade) - This grade consists of all activity on the instructional software which is at the heart of READ 180. This computer program individualizes instruction for each student who signs in. This is an integral part of the program. This grade also includes the student’s oral fluency grade.

Independent/Modeled Reading (25% of grade) – This grade consists of self motivation and self checks. The first part is a daily reading log while the second is portion of this grade is the actual test on the novel. Projects may be substituted for tests in some situations.

Mrs. Zapp’s Classroom Rules

All classroom rules and student handbook are expected to be upheld at all times. If a student chooses to not follow a rule, they will be given a warning. If behavior continues, a referral will be written.

1. RESPECT every person. Lack of such will not

be tolerated.

2. Be READY for class everyday. Proper

materials and mindset.

3. Take RESPONSIBILITY for your choices and

actions.

4. Build RELATIONSHIPS with those around you.

5. REPAIR situations quickly and honestly.

Food and Drink Policy:

NO food is allowed in the classroom setting.

Water is the only drink allowed. If you have water, it must be in a clear container and have a lid that is kept on it.

Cell Phone Policy:

Cell phones and all other electronic devices are not allowed to be on during school hours. All devices need to be kept out of sight at all times. 

�If a cell phone is heard by the means of a ring, text or any other alerts OR seen, the phone will be confiscated, taken to the office, and referral given

Bathroom Passes:

Passes will be issued at the beginning of the semester. Be wise when choosing to use them.

Quarantine Learning Plan:

This plan is only available to students on an approved plan through the Nurse’s Office.

Daily Work: Check Google Classroom for daily plans and assignments. If you cannot find material, you are responsible for contacting the teacher.

Projects: Long term projects will still be due on given dates. Students may have to upload the project digitally.

Tests: Tests will only be given in class. Absent students will be responsible for making up the missing test upon return.

Materials: Extra material will be uploaded to the Google Classroom. If a student is unable to find material, he or she must contact the teacher.

Due Dates: All due dates remain the same for quarantined students aside from tests which must be taken upon return to school.

Additional Information:

Students with an IEP or 504 Plan may have individualized accommodations. There are some embedded features on Chromebooks which can help such as Google Read & Write (purple puzzle piece on the toolbar with an "rw") to read material aloud. Contact your teacher for due dates regarding extended time and to discuss accommodations.
