Every year, high school grads walk away from billions in free federal grant money that could help pay for college, according to NerdWallet. Why? Because they don’t fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, aka the FAFSA®.

1. I’m not going to fill out the form because I’m not eligible.

“That is not correct,” says Coval. “If the student thinks they are going to borrow at all, they need to fill out the form.” Remember, she adds, not all financial aid is need-based. Unsubsidized loans also require that you fill out the FAFSA.

2. My parents make too much money, and I won’t qualify for aid.

Most applicants qualify for some aid, regardless of their parents’ earnings. The FAFSA actually has no income cap, so you can apply no matter how high your family’s income.

3. FAFSA is only available for federal aid.

“A lot of the states and institutions will use FAFSA data,” Coval notes. “So if you don’t qualify for something at the federal level, maybe you’ll qualify for something at the state level or the institution level.” Filling out the FAFSA also qualifies you for other types of aid, including grants, work-study, scholarships and college aid.

4. The FAFSA is too complicated and hard to fill out.

On average, it takes about 30 minutes to fill out. Plus, the government is continually working on improvements to the application process. The FAFSA has been streamlined, especially online where the application uses skip logic that will skip over unnecessary questions.

5. I’m not eligible for a student loan because my parents are undocumented.

Having undocumented parents should not prevent students from filling out the FAFSA. “So long as you are a US citizen, permanent resident or eligible noncitizen, you can fill out a FAFSA,” says Marie Groark, director of Get Schooled, an organization that runs a texting hotline to help students get into college. If your parents are undocumented, just fill out nine zeroes (000000000) where it asks for their SSNs. If you get an error message, keep hitting the Next button until you advance to the next page. When you reach the end, you will have to click the Submit button several times if you get the same error.

The FAFSA form requires students and parents to apply for an FSA ID, which also asks for SSNs. But Groark says you can still file for an FSA ID even if your parents are undocumented. “What a student needs to do in that case is simply print out the signature page, sign it and have their parents sign it. Then they mail it in. Printing and mailing your signed FAFSA functions as a way around the need for parents to create an FSA ID.”

If your parents didn’t file a tax return, they can enter the requested financial information manually on FAFSA’s website or through the myStudentAid mobile app. Your school may also require you to submit a Non-Tax Filer Parent Statement or Income and Expense Report. If your parents don’t want to submit their financial information, you can indicate on the FAFSA that there are special circumstances. This will allow you to complete the form without those details. You will have to contact the financial aid office, however, to provide documentation.

To apply for financial aid using the FAFSA in 2022-2023, you and your parent, if applicable, should:

•Get an FSA ID at fsaid.ed.gov. The FSA ID is a username and password that can be used to access certain U.S. Department of Education web sites and to sign the online FAFSA electronically.

•If you don’t use an FSA ID to sign the online FAFSA, you will need to print, sign and mail a signature page, which will add delays to the processing of your FAFSA.

•When creating an FSA ID, it is important to list the student’s name exactly as it is shown on the student’s Social Security card. The FOTW will ask for the student’s first and last name. For example: report Susan Jones, not Suzie Jones or S. Jones, if Susan is the student’s first name on the Social Security card.

•It’s important to write down your FSA ID and the challenge questions and answers in case they cannot be remembered. After you write down your FSA ID, take a picture with your mobile phone so you always have it available to you.

•Complete and submit the 2022-2023 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) at fafsa.ed.gov. The online FAFSA is also known as FAFSA on the Web. The sooner you submit it, the better, since some financial aid funds are limited and may run out.

•After submitting the completed and electronically signed 2022-2023 FAFSA online, print or save a copy of the Confirmation Page. The Confirmation Page will show

•Estimated Federal Pell Grant eligibility. The Pell Grant is a federal grant worth up to $6,495 (in 2021-2022) based on the student’s calculated financial need and enrollment status

•Estimated Federal Direct Student Loan eligibility

•Information about the colleges that the student listed on the FAFSA

The primary benefit of using FAFSA on the Web (FOTW) is that the processing time is significantly reduced. Students and schools receive a response from the FAFSA application processor more quickly, which in turn assists schools in preparing a more timely notification of eligibility for financial aid. (This is a definite advantage if the student is trying to decide between two or more schools.)

Other benefits of using the online FAFSA include:

•Fewer errors on the form. Built-in edit checks will not allow the family to go to the next section if something is left incomplete or inconsistent in a prior section. Before submitting the FOTW, the program will do a final review of the entire application, checking for missing and/or conflicting information.

•Thanks to skip-logic, there are fewer questions to complete. This means that the student will not be asked questions that do not apply. (Example: unmarried students will not be asked questions about a spouse.)

•Online help is available for each question

•In many cases, drop-down boxes are provided so the family can choose from a selection of responses.

•Families who have submitted their 2020 federal income tax returns may be able to transfer IRS data directly to the FOTW.

•As soon as the FOTW is submitted, a Confirmation page can be printed or saved to instantly verify that the application has been submitted. This page will contain a Confirmation Stamp showing the date and time that the FOTW was successfully submitted. The Confirmation Page includes the EFC and, if submitting the FAFSA ,estimated Federal Pell Grant and federal student loan eligibility. It also lists the colleges that will receive the FAFSA data.

To take full advantage of the FAFSA on the Web, the student and one of his or her custodial parents can sign the form electronically if they each have an FSA ID.

You will also get the Student Aid Report (SAR) faster if you provide an email address on the FAFSA of CADAA.
