Walt: write a recount

Experience:

  • Have boards and carrots on desks for students to see as they entered class.
  • Take students outside and give each student a carrot, board and knife.
  • Direct students to carve their own carrot man!
  • Take lots of photos showing each step of the experience.

Session 1:

  • Share with students WALT for week and construct Success Criteria.
    • Focus on reminding students that we will be writing a recount - explaining something that has happened.
  • As a whole class brainstorm and share their creations.
  • Then plan first paragraph with students.
  • Send students to complete first paragraph.
  • Pick one sentence to use as an example to add more detail.
    • I saw carrots on the table.
  • Direct students to add and alter their first paragraph.

  • As a whole class brainstorm and discuss what happened during Paul Martin’s visit last week.
  • Discuss with students what we need for an introduction. Brainstorm some different ideas for story starters.
  • Direct students to write first paragraph.
  • Pair, share paragraphs and discuss as a whole class good sentences.
  • Repeat above process for other paragraphs.

Session 1:

  • Model to students first example of how to add detail into a sentence.
  • Discuss how it makes it more interesting and helps imagine it in our heads.
  • Direct students to make a copy and complete the four sentences adding detail.

Experience:

  • Have food (mousse & jelly) in cups hidden under a box in the class.
  • Get students into pairs then one at a time they blindfold each other and taste one of the foods.
  • Then get students to swap over.
  • Take lots of photos showing each step of the experience.

Session 1:

  • Share with students WALT for week and construct Success Criteria.
    • Focus on reminding students that we will be writing a recount - explaining something that has happened.
  • As a whole class brainstorm and share their thought on the food.
  • Then plan first paragraph with students.
  • Send students to complete first paragraph.
  • Pick one sentence to use as an example to add more detail.
    • In class I saw boxes on the tables. It was Monday morning, I walked into class and saw some boxes, that weren’t there last week.
  • Direct students to amend their first paragraph.

Session 2:

  • Redo experience as a show for those students who missed it.
  • Discuss with students what it tasted like.
  • Present to students a pre-written sentence, then co-construct with students how to add in more detail to the sentence.
    • In class I saw boxes on the tables. It was Monday morning, I walked into class and saw some boxes, that weren’t there last week.
  • Send students to complete send paragraph remembering to use this adding detail.
  • Pick one sentence from students to use as an example to add more detail.
  • Direct students to amend their second paragraph.

Session 3:

  • Carry on modelling sentences and allowing students time to write.
  • Discuss with students how each paragraph is about one idea. Then get students to find a photo for each paragraph.
  • Model to students how to copy and paste the writing and photos to their blog.
  • Direct students to post to blog and blog.

Week 7.

Walt: write a descriptive narrative (paints a picture in the reader's mind)

Success Criteria: We will write a story which has juicy words and has paragraphs in this order: 1. Characters & Setting, 2. Problem, 3. Resolution

Session 1:

  • Share with students WALT for week and construct Success Criteria.
    • Focus on reminding students what a Narrative story needs to include.
  • Show students the image of Spider man trying to save the woman.
    • Discuss with students the different emotions of the characters, from what we can see on their faces.
  • Direct students to choose if they want this photo to be the beginning or ending of their story.
  • Then students can pair, share / brainstorm their ideas.
  • Direct students to make a copy of the planning doc.
  • Give students 10min to plan.
  • Then give students 20-30min to write for this first session.

Create a superhero

Week 4.

Teacher Notes:

Walt: Use descriptive words to give our reader a clear image of what we are writing about.

Success Criteria: We will know we have learned this when we can write a paragraph with lots of juicy words in it.

Session 1:

  • Share with students about the situation of Bear Bax
  • Discuss with students how last week we described current superheros but this week we are going to create our own brand new superheros.
  • Show video of Stan Lee
  • Discuss and brainstorm that to create a new superhero we need to think of something original.
    • How the superhero was created?
    • What makes him a superhero?
  • Get students to make a copy of the doc and brainstorm their superhero.

Session 2:

  • Write character descriptions.
  • Get students to write one sentence then discuss how we can add extra detail.

Monday

  • Review with students what we are learning to do in our writing this week.
  • Read to students my example paragraph.
  • Direct students to pair together to finish, edit and finalise their writing.
  • Share writing together before publishing
  • Direct students to use new comic creator to create their superhero.

Superhero Descriptions

Week 3.

Teacher Notes:

Walt: Use descriptive words to give our reader a clear image of what we are writing about.

Success Criteria: We will know we have learned this when we can write a paragraph with lots of juicy words in it.

Session 1:

  • Show students a character description.
  • Make a copy of the doc.
  • Give student time to research and write notes.
  • Discuss and create a list of descriptive words to describe the superheros.

Session 2:

  • Group students into groups to explore what words they could use to describe to their superhero.
  • Focus on students finding more exciting words to describe what their superhero looks like.

Superhero Speech Marks

Week 2.

Teacher Notes:

Walt: Use speech marks correctly.

Success Criteria: We will know we have learned this when we can write a short story which includes correctly placed speech marks.

Session 1:

  • Add to the walls string clothesline with a number of labels before them: Batman shouted. Spider Man exclaimed. Wonder woman whispered.
  • Show students WALT presentation and form a success criteria as a whole class.
  • Get students to hold a washing line in front of class. Use these speech sentences to experiment with students where punctuation should go.
  • Work through these rules

  • Then in groups get students have to write out what a superhero might say then add it to their wall. Also add punctuation.
  • Stop whole class and get student groups to check each others. Discuss what rules they need to know or don’t know.
  • Get students to take a photo using their chromebook.
  • Repeat with a different sentence.
  • Take another photo - then direct to post to their blogs and add to blog log.

Superhero Speech Marks

Week 2.

Teacher Notes:

Walt: Use speech marks correctly.

Success Criteria: We will know we have learned this when we can write a short story which includes correctly placed speech marks.

Session 2:

  • Show students WALT presentation and remind students of WALT and our class success criteria.
  • Get students into pairs then direct them to quiz each other on the class rules without looking. Give them these rules in pairs.
  • Quizz a couple students in the whole class to see if they know all the rules.

  • Open writing doc and model to students how to write about the picture of what the superheros are saying to each other.
  • Discuss and show students how to use correct speech marks and punctuation. �
  • After first paragraph pair check each other’s work to see if they have completed our WALT.
  • Share back as a whole class their paragraphs.
  • Post to blog and blog log. Ensure this is done neatly.
