our

Inspiration

Our group is working on a remix documentary and website about racism and its connection to social media. We chose this topic because racism has been an ongoing issue for so long with little improvement. Also, in the context of the pandemic a lot of us only had social media as our primary social outlet and we noticed that racism has had a big impact on consumers of social media.

Our Project

We are creating a website with a remix documentary about how racism has manifested over time and the influence of social media on this issue.

Our aim is to have a deeper historical understanding of this social problem. We also hope to expose the different forms of racism on social media and to encourage youth to not simply passively consume it, but instead call it out and decry it.

our

Design Process

  1. We first brainstormed social issues that we care about and then narrowed down our topic through a rigorous pitching process.
  2. We have made personal video diaries, conducted community interviews, and interviewed with youth activists. We are working in teams to complete our website project and remix documentary.
  3. The video we are sharing at Emoticon is a trailer for a longer remix documentary which will be included in our final website project.

Racism has persisted in our society since the beginning of time. There needs to be a sense of urgency to address it… or it could go on forever.

Conclusion

“We must destroy white supremacy within our society. That’s what we have to tackle, unfortunately” (Interview with youth activist, 2021).
