ROUTINE ACTIVITY THEORY

9

This project was funded by the European Union’s Internal Security Fund — Police.

People usually commit crimes in between their "routine activities". The more convenient the situation, the easier it is to convince yourself it's okay to commit a crime.

RAT theory explains this by dividing crime into three elements:

  • Suitable target or "Soft target"
  • (Absence of) a capable guardian
  • Likely offender (that can become a motivated one)

SOFT TARGETS (WHERE MOST ROUTINE ACTIVITIES TAKE PLACE)

10

This project was funded by the European Union’s Internal Security Fund — Police.

Shopping areas

Shopping malls, main shopping streets in city centre, etc.

Nightlife areas

Area with a high density of bars, pubs and/or nightclubs, restaurants, coffee shops, small concert halls

Cultural venues

MULTIPLE-HELIX APPROACH

  • Empowering local and regional authorities with theoretical knowledge and practical tools to ensure the security of public spaces and the protection of soft targets against potential (manmade) threats. We do this by…

14

15 of 23

MULTIPLE-HELIX APPROACH

    • …getting all stakeholders at one table (urban planners, law enforcement, municipalities, creatives)
    • And by facilitating a multiple-helix approach to urban security

15

INTERACTIVE LEARNING METHODS

    • …giving training online during covid-19 made us think outside the (back then) box

INTERACTIVE LEARNING METHODS

    • …giving training online during covid-19 made us think outside the (back then) box

INTERACTIVE LEARNING METHODS

Luckily after covid-19, we were able to continue with physical trainings, by:

    • …conducting in situ trainings (going to an actual PSOI and noting down everything we see in a workbook)
    • conducting (quick) vulnerability assessments (using secu4all materials such as stickers and a quick VAT template

18

19 of 23

INTERACTIVE LEARNING METHODS

    • …including thinking outside the box about:
      • Tourism (5x as many inhabitants as during summer)
      • Different types of crimes during different times of the day/month/season/year
      • Using measures that are not season dependent (such as freezing bollards up north!)
      • Explaining the us-them antagonism as a fallacy in thinking about crime prevention

19

BUILDING COMMUNITIES, BY…

    • …changing the dynamic (pineapple on pizza? Bingo.)
    • …Bridging gaps between law enforcement and citizens or private companies
    • …and by giving practical advice.
