Fasting can help me feel close to Heavenly Father

Joseph B. Wirthlin

Former Member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

One way we show our love is through observance of the law of the fast. This law is based upon a primary yet profound principle—a simple practice—that, if observed with the proper spirit, will help us draw closer to our Heavenly Father and strengthen our faith…

We observe that in the scriptures, fasting almost always is linked with prayer. Without prayer, fasting is not complete fasting; it’s simply going hungry…Fasting and prayer can help develop within us courage and confidence. It can strengthen our character and build self-restraint and discipline. Often when we fast, our righteous prayers and petitions have greater power. Testimonies grow. We mature spiritually and emotionally and sanctify our souls. Each time we fast, we gain a little more control over our worldly appetites and passions.

A Child’s Prayer(Children’s Songbook #12)

MUSIC

1. Heavenly Father, are you really there?

And do you hear and answer ev’ry child’s prayer?

Some say that heaven is far away,

But I feel it close around me as I pray.

Heavenly Father, I remember now

Something that Jesus told disciples long ago:

“Suffer the children to come to me.”

Father, in prayer I’m coming now to thee.

2. Pray, he is there;

Speak, he is list’ning.

You are his child;

His love now surrounds you.

He hears your prayer;

He loves the children.

Of such is the kingdom,

the kingdom of heav’n.

I can choose the right as Jesus did

9 of 33

I can choose the right as Jesus did

SCRIPTURE

3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,

6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

- Matthew 4:3-7

I can choose the right as Jesus did

Janette Hales Beckham

Former Young Women General President

In knowing the scriptures and trusting our Heavenly Father’s words, our Savior himself was an example to us. It is recorded in the fourth chapter of Luke that when Jesus had fasted for forty days and was tempted by the devil…Jesus knew the words of the prophets.

Satan again tempted Jesus, offering him power and glory if he would worship Satan. Jesus resisted the temptation and responded with the words, “It is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve”. Jesus knew his Father’s will, and the words strengthened him in a time of temptation. The words of the scriptures will strengthen you in times of temptation. The scriptures have been given to us to help us find peace and reassurance in times of crisis, to help us find solutions to our everyday challenges, to strengthen us in times of temptation.

Choose the Right Way(Children’s Songbook #160)

MUSIC

1. There's a right way to live and be happy;

It is choosing the right ev'ry day.

I am learning the teachings of Jesus;

They will help me and show me the way.

2. Through the gospel I learn to be prayerful,

To have faith, to repent, to obey,

And I know if I live by his teachings,

I will truly be happy each day.

Heavenly Father has given us the power and means to resist temptation

SCRIPTURE

8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

Heavenly Father has given us the power and means to resist temptation

Jorge F. Zeballos

Of the Seventy

The Savior Himself, at the beginning of His ministry, “was left to be tempted of the devil.” But Jesus emerged successful from that great trial… What made Jesus emerge triumphant from these most difficult moments was His spiritual preparation, which permitted Him to be in a condition to resist the temptations of the adversary…We can have the tranquility of knowing that the Lord will never permit us to be tempted beyond what we can resist…The Lord always provides us with help when we face adversity, temptation, incomprehension, infirmities, and even death…[B]ecause of the grace that reaches us through the Atonement of our Savior, we will be successful in constructing a life resistant to sin, resistant to temptation, and strengthened to endure the sad, difficult times in our lives. And furthermore, we will be in a condition to access all the blessings promised through the love of our Father and our Savior.

As a Child of God(Children’s Friend)

MUSIC

I came to earth with power to choose.

Good choices bless me and my family too.

As a child of God, I receive special light:

The Holy Ghost helps me to know what is right.

I feel so safe and happy because

Such feelings of peace come from family love.

As a child of God, I receive special light:

The Holy Ghost helps me to know what is right.

In my own home I’ll happily serve.

I’ll strengthen my family by my good works.

As a child of God, I receive special light:

The Holy Ghost helps me to know what is right.

Jesus Christ is the prophesied Messiah

19 of 33

Jesus Christ is the prophesied Messiah

SCRIPTURE

16-17 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

18-19 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

Jesus Christ is the prophesied Messiah

Robert D. Hales

Former Member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

The holy scriptures are the word of God given to us for our salvation. The scriptures are essential in receiving a testimony of Jesus Christ and His gospel…These sacred records bear testimony of the Savior and lead us to Him…If the Savior were among us in the flesh today, He would teach us from the scriptures as He taught when He walked upon the earth. In the synagogue at Nazareth, “there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias…And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”

…From Genesis to Malachi and from Moses to Abraham, it was prophesied the Savior would come. From the books of Matthew to Revelation, from Nephi to Moroni, and from Joseph Smith to our beloved living prophet…the prophets all testify that Jesus Christ, the long-awaited Messiah, has come and will come again. In Him “old things are done away, and all things have become new.”

I Lived in Heaven(Children’s Songbook #4)

MUSIC

1. I lived in heaven a long time ago, it is true;

Lived there and loved there with people I know. So did you.

Then Heav’nly Father presented a beautiful plan,

All about earth and eternal salvation for man.

2. Father said he needed someone who had enough love

To give his life so we all could return there above.

There was another who sought for the honor divine.

Jesus said, “Father, send me, and the glory be thine.”

3. Jesus was chosen, and as the Messiah he came,

Conquering evil and death through his glorious name,

Giving us hope of a wonderful life yet to be

Home in that heaven where Father is waiting for me.

As I trust in the Lord, He can help me reach my divine potential

24 of 33

As I trust in the Lord, He can help me reach my divine potential

SCRIPTURE

3-4 And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon’s, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught.

5-6 And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake.

7 And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink.

8-9 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:

As I trust in the Lord, He can help me reach my divine potential

Clark G. Gilbert

Of the Seventy

[I]n this Church, we believe in the divine potential of all of God’s children and in our ability to become something more in Christ…[He] sees divine potential no matter where we start. He saw it in the beggar, the sinner, and the infirm. He saw it in the fisherman, the tax collector, and even the zealot. No matter where we start, Christ considers what we do with what we are given.

…We must do our best, which includes repentance, but it is only through the Lord’s grace that we can realize our divine potential…Regardless of whether we start in abundant or difficult circumstances, we will realize our ultimate potential only when we make God our partner…Imagine if your whole life, you were told you could never succeed. Then consider the impact of being taught that you are an actual son or daughter of God with divine possibility…That’s powerful.

I’ll Follow Him in Faith(Children's Friend)

MUSIC

1. The Lord has blessed me with gospel truth.

I have learned His ways in my early youth.

I will share my light for I know it’s right

To testify of Him.

The Lord has blessed me with simple faith.

If I pray for help, He will give me strength.

I will do His work. I will gladly serve.

I’ll follow Him in faith.

2. The Lord has blessed me to feel His love.

I have felt His promptings and learned to trust.

So in all I do, I’ll be faithful to

The things I know are true.

The Lord has blessed me in many ways.

With a thankful heart I will sing His praise.

I will raise my voice and proclaim my choice

To follow Him in faith.

Jesus Christ invites us to follow Him and to be “fishers of men.”

SCRIPTURE

19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.

20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.

21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.

22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.

- Matthew 4:19-22

Jesus Christ invites us to follow Him and to be “fishers of men.”

David A. Bednar

Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

Peter and Andrew are strong examples of hearing and following the Master. The Savior likewise instructs you and me, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.” To take up one’s cross is to deny oneself of all ungodliness and every worldly lust and to keep the commandments of the Lord.

The Savior has admonished us to become as He is. Thus, following the Lord includes emulating Him. We continue to come to know the Lord as we seek through the power of His Atonement to become like Him.

I’m Trying to Be like Jesus(Children’s Songbook #78)

MUSIC

1. I’m trying to be like Jesus;

I’m following in his ways.

I’m trying to love as he did, in all that I do and say.

At times I am tempted

to make a wrong choice,

But I try to listen

as the still small voice whispers,

Words and music: Janice Kapp Perry, b. 1938

2. I’m trying to love my neighbor;

I’m learning to serve my friends.

I watch for the day of gladness when Jesus will come again.

I try to remember

the lessons he taught.

Then the Holy Spirit

enters into my thoughts, saying:

Chorus:

“Love one another as Jesus loves you.

Try to show kindness in all that you do.

Be gentle and loving in deed and in thought,

For these are the things Jesus taught.”
