  • There is a persistent problem of wrong‐way drivers on Jeffreys Grove School Road in the Jeffreys Grove Magnet Elementary School (JGMES) zone during carpool times
  • In the past month (through Oct 4th 2021) three JGMES parents were able to photograph 9 wrong‐way drivers. See the linked slide deck for the photos. Anecdotally, this is a daily issue
  • You can help. Please take photos (when stopped and safe to do so) or share dashcam footage any time you see a wrong‐way driver (or another safety issue) to help us document the scale of the problem to communicate with the Raleigh Police Department and others
  • This information gathering effort is currently coordinated by concerned JGMES parents
  • We are engaged with (but do not represent) the JGMES PTA and school leadership, the city councilor for District E (David Knight) and the City of Raleigh
  • Our information gathering is initially targeted at a discussion with the Raleigh Police Department about increased enforcement of existing traffic laws
  • Other related discussions, such as the City of Raleigh sidewalk petition process may progress in parallel

Context

  • Photos are taken by stationary carpool drivers and parents of school students walking to and from school
  • These are only the wrong way drivers we managed to photograph in the period September 2nd to October 4th, 2021
  • All vehicles are inside the signed school zone when photographed
  • Anecdotally this is an almost daily occurrence
  • 3 vehicles seen just on October 4th including one truck previously photographed twice before
  • Every wrong way driver shown has travelled on the wrong side of freshly painted (in Summer 2021) double yellow lines on the part of Jeffreys Grove School Rd where there is no sidewalk between Ponderosa Rd and 6025 Jeffreys Grove School Rd (Some photos may have been taken closer to school where the sidewalk restarts)
  • At least 8 JGMES students walk to school, with accompanying adults and some with younger siblings), on a daily basis on this part of Jeffreys Grove School Rd

Calls to action

  • Parents & other responsible adults bringing kids to/from school:
    • If it’s an emergency, e.g. an accident occurs, call 911
    • If the situation warrants the Raleigh Police Department non-emergency number is 919-831-6311. From prior experience this is helpful only for putting a call out from dispatch to nearby RPD officers to look out for the vehicle. It’s not really a good logging mechanism but if a wrong way driver has completely blocked traffic, for example, this is useful and avoids tying up 911 if it’s only the police that are needed
    • Take photographs of incidents whenever possible when stationary; share dashcam footage if you have it. Pictures of license plates and of drivers’ faces are most useful
    • Unfortunately, RPD’s online crime report form doesn’t support reporting this scenario
