Mulgimaa / Mulgid

Mulgimaa is a cultural and historical region in Southern Estonia, which consists of five former parishes: Tarvastu, Paistu, Halliste, Karksi and Helme.

The southern part of Viljandi parish and the eastern part of Saarde parish have also been considered Mulgimaa. At the same time, according to Eduard Vääri, most of the ancient inhabitants of Helme parish do not consider themselves as mulk.

Until the end of the 19th century, the area called Mulgia was an ethnographically and linguistically distinct ethnographic and linguistic area, a descendant of Muinas-Sakala County.

Today, the five parishes of Mulgimaa (Halliste, Helme, Karksi, Paistu and Tarvastu) mark and designate only a certain type of folk costume and, among older people, also the area of the Mulgi, or Western Estonian dialect of the South Estonian language.
