Resumé: Why?

Strong 1st Impression

Highlight your best attributes

A resumé is your best chance to make a strong first impression with a potential employer

Most recruiters don’t spend too long reading through resumés, so it’s important for you to make your best attributes POP

What is it?

Why include one?

Start with a CAREER OBJECTIVE

  • A career objective aligns your skills with your employment goals in a one or two sentence statement at the top of your resumé
  • A career objective shows your employer why you’re applying for the position and how it would be beneficial for them to hire you

15 of 24

Education

You’re a professional student. You have a lot of educational experience. Prepare a more detailed education section

Include:

  • Academic and non-academic educational experiences
  • Good GPA? Include it!
  • Any/all extracurricular activities, such as sports & clubs; these show that you are a well-rounded individual.
  • Special projects

16 of 24

Careful!

The Google doc resumé templates you’re probably using mostly include EXPERIENCE first. As a student, you probably want to highlight your EDUCATION first instead.

Don't forget

Education before

Experience

17 of 24

Experience

Though your work experience may be limited, you can include any/all experiences that highlight your work ethic and ability to work well with others.

Include:

  • Any/all work experience
  • Volunteer activities
  • Leadership experience
  • Special achievements, such as with 4H, or another organization
  • Any/all specific skills

18 of 24

Awards & Accolades

Including your awards and special achievements helps you stand out and shows your employer that you can make a positive impact

Include:

  • Academic and athletic awards
  • Awards from clubs
  • Special recognition from any group, teacher, or organization
  • A mention of something great you’ve had to overcome

19 of 24

Skills

Be sure to include both hard skills and soft skills.

  • Hard skills are those that are specific to a certain job; they are learned skills.
  • Soft skills are personal attributes that enable a person to interact effectively

Include:

  • Hard (learned) skills, such as specific computer or language skills, CTE certifications, etc.
  • Soft skills include strong verbal communication, problem-solving, interactive skills, etc.
  • Are you organized? Mention this.

OPTIONAL:

Interests

Include a quick mention of your interests at the conclusion of your resumé to paint a bigger picture of who you are.

Keep this short, just one line!

  • Do you like to play games, go for walks, or play a sport outside of school not mentioned above?
  • What about reading, cooking, baking, photography, video editing, & spending time with family a/o friends?
  • Choose the first few items that come to your mind for this section.

Tonight!

Tell your parents/guardians that you’re working on a resumé to go with your PaICE application, and see if they have good ideas as to what you should include.

No Official HW, but it would be beneficial to work on your resumé

a bit.
