Drafting a Gender Responsive Lesson Plan

2 of 3

Drafting a Lesson Plan

    • Subject-Specific Analysis:
      • In pairs choose a lesson from your textbooks – it can be any subject
      • What gender biases exist in content, examples, or language?
      • How might these biases impact student engagement?
    • Gender Lens Application:
      • Think about how you might revise the lesson using a gender lens for example:
        • Language: Replace gendered language with neutral language.
        • Examples: Ensure diverse gender representation in pictures or examples.
        • Design tasks or ask questions that challenge stereotypes.
    • Draft a basic lesson plan noting any key considerations you consider at each stage of the lesson.

  • How you will deliver the lesson, keeping in mind the class composition, the number of boys and girls, and their particular needs;
  • The environment, including seating arrangements;
  • the activities and the learning materials needed;
  • Interactions with and between the learners, including the language used; and
  • assessment of the students.
