  • Eligible LMT User Communities
    • Mexico: 70% (with 2.5% going to researchers from Spain).
    • UMASS/Five Colleges: 15%
    • USA Institutions: 15%
    • NOTE: for “standard” proposals, observing time is allocated to the community according to the affiliation of the PI of the proposal.

  • Dual Anonymous Format for Proposals

Scientific and Technical portions of the proposal are to be formatted in a manner that does not reveal the identities of the proposal team. See:

  • Project Time Limits and TolTEC Shared Risk
    • Projects with SEQUOIA, RSR, 1mm & B4R instruments are limited to 35 hours.
    • TolTEC projects will be shared risk and are limited to 5 hours.
  • LMT Observing Time Calculators
    • Updates have been made to explicitly account for observation overhead.
    • All proposals must request time using the values obtained by the time calculators so that all time requests are consistent.
  • Procedure for Student Thesis Projects
    • Student thesis plan should be emailed separately to the Helpdesk, including the proposal ID assigned by Hedwig. 
    • Status as a student thesis project will not be used in evaluation of scientific merit.
    • Status as a student thesis project will be considered by the Community review and International TAC in assigning the final priority of the proposals.

  • Standard Projects (< 35 hours)
  • Large Projects (> 35 hours)
    • Large Project proposals will require additional information about the project plans for team management and data reduction.
    • Large Projects may propose to divide observing time between LMT communities.
    • Large Projects undergo regular reviews of progress.
    • NO LARGE PROJECTS MAY BE PROPOSED FOR 2023-S1!
  • Target of Opportunity / Director’s Discretionary Time Policies
    • TOO proposals refer to cases where the specific object or time for observation is not known. The scientific case for observations is submitted to the normal proposal review.
    • DDT proposals refer to special urgent cases which could not have been anticipated and reviewed during the normal proposal review. These will be reviewed by a special panel and require an extraordinary scientific case to be scheduled on the telescope.
  • Use of LMT for VLBI Projects
    • Proposals to include the LMT in VLBI projects must be submitted to the normal proposal review and led by a member of one of the LMT user communities.

  • Proposal Review is a four stage process:
  • Anonymous Stages:
    • Technical Review of project feasibility
    • Scientific Review to establish scientific merit and ranking
  • Open Stages:
    • Community Review to adjust relative rankings of proposal from the community to consider additional criteria of importance to the community.
    • International Review to resolve any conflicts which may exist.
  • Results of the complete review are expected to be complete by December 23, 2022.
