Attendance Protocols

During school hours, it is the school’s responsibility to know if the students are present.

If a student is marked absent during the first class period, we will contact the parent/guardian through either a phone call or text.

The contact number that we use is the number listed as “#1 Attendance Phone”.

Attendance Reporting Form

  • The best way to communicate a student’s absence, dismissal, or tardy is to complete the Attendance Reporting Form.
  • This form is found on the Community Portal and also on the Sturgis Website, on the campus page, in the sidebar

  • ONLY PARENTS/GUARDIANS SHOULD COMPLETE THIS FORM

  • The submissions of this form are shared amongst our front office staff, our nurse, and our school counselors

  • Please give a reason for absences, tardies, or dismissals to allow us to code the attendance properly.

Excused Absences

Absences are excused if:

  • Sturgis receives parental notice indicating bereavement or religious observance.
  • Sturgis receives professional (not parental) documentation supporting absences due to illness or appointments. Professionals might include doctors, medical facilities, legal staff, dentists, psychotherapists, etc . This includes up to 3 days for college visits for Grade 11 and 12 students.
  • The absences are school-sponsored (field trips, athletic dismissals, etc.).

Unexcused Absences

  • All other absences will be recorded as unexcused, including family vacations as well as non-school sponsored sports, activities and other programs.
  • Every five (5) unexcused absences in a quarter/marking term the student will be assigned a Saturday Make Up Learning Session.

Tardies

  • Classes begin at 8:20 a.m. Students not in class by that time are tardy.
  • For every 10 tardies a student will be assigned a lunchtime Make Up Learning Time (MULT)
  • The front office should be notified by the Attendance Reporting Form if you are aware that your student is going to be tardy. You may also call the office or come in with your student if you are unable to complete the form.
  • The front office will call parents/guardians if a student is tardy and we were not notified.

Dismissals

  • A student is not allowed to leave school without the consent of his/her parent.
  • Again, the best form of communication is the Attendance Reporting Form.
  • The form should be submitted by 9 a.m. on the day of dismissal.
  • If the office receives a submission after 9:00 a.m., the parent/guardian will be contacted to confirm the dismissal.
  • Students dismissed prior to lunch will be coded “DA”. That dismissal is considered an absent by the State of Massachusetts.

Nurse Dismissals

If a student feels sick during the school day, it is recommended that he/she sees the nurse. If the nurse determines the student should go home, that dismissal is excused.

Pick Up for Dismissals

If a student is being picked up for dismissal, we ask that the parent/guardian come into the front office to sign out the student. If the student drives himself/herself, they should also sign out at the front office.
