Understanding your Employment Status and Evaluation Process

  • Visiting Teachers & Classified Substitutes - May be evaluated at any time by supervising office staff, teachers and site supervisors.
  • Classified Employees
    • Probationary - Prior to end of 3rd month & at least by the end of the 5th month
    • Permanent - per the collective bargaining agreement
  • Certificated (SDEA) Employees
    • Temporary - Annual
    • Probationary - Annual
    • Permanent - Every other year

Preparing for work: Employee Expectations

As part of your onboarding process discuss the following with your supervisor:

  • Staff/ Student interaction expectations
  • Dress and grooming policies (consider safety, heat and professionalism)
  • Technology use and expectations in your work site (cell phones, computers, etc)
  • Available training opportunities
  • School/ Department Safety procedures
  • Work schedule and absence reporting

Bargaining Unit Introduction

There are 7 bargaining units within the San Diego Unified School District. As District employees you are part of these organizations. The District and the units work together through the collective bargaining process to ensure a positive work environment through workplace integrity, respect, and create safe, professional, and rewarding work environments.

The Labor Relations Department provides all employees and bargaining unit leaders with supports related to the application of the respective collective bargaining agreements. Each contract is located on this website and can be accessed by anyone, 24/7.

For your information, we have provided you with the contact information for each of the units on the following slides.

Management Bargaining Unit

Employees in this unit include site level administrators, as well as both classified and certificated central office managers and supervisors (including police supervisors).

Classified Bargaining Unit Introduction

Classified employees perform a wide range of essential work in our public schools. In San Diego Unified, employees are represented by three different units.

  • Office-Technical and Business Services, (OTBS) Chapter 788 employees include office and clerical work as well as computer services. Jeffrey Anschutz serves as the President for this unit.

  • Operations Support Services, OSS Chapter 724 employees provide food, school maintenance and transportation services. Gabriel Huezo serves as the President for this unit.

  • Paraeducators, PARA Chapter 759 employees typically provide academic assistance and paraeducator services, library assistance and more. Brenda Mitchell serves as the President for this unit.

San Diego Schools Police Officers Association

The San Diego Schools Police Officers Association serves sworn police officers and non-sworn dispatchers.

Certificated Employee Unit

The certificated employee unit includes all teachers, nurses, counselors, and all employees required to hold a credential in the state of California.
