This page includes four top menus that are broken down into our main navigation tools:

The About section provides overall information about our district, leaders, initiative and how the District is run.
The Academics and Schools sections provides information about our programs and services for students.
The Enrollment tab provides important information for families to enroll their children in school.

As an employee of the District, there are a number of resources available to you. We will take a few minutes to review these resources for you so that you may refer to them later

Employee Calendars: All employee calendars are located on the internal employee website called Inside Unified. The employee portal, known as the Intranet, is a website used only by District employees. To access this website, you must log in with your district employee ID number and password.

Salary Schedules: There are many salary schedules within the District. To locate your salary plan, access the Human Resources public webpage. On the left side of the page, select Salary Schedule. Then find the group that you are in. If you do not know which group you belong to, check your position description, this information is located directly above or below the Salary Grade information. The first page of each plan provides a list of job classifications by title. Look for the title of your position and then scroll down the plan to find your salary grade.

Position Descriptions: Position Descriptions for Classified, Management/ Supervisors and Confidential staff are located on the Human Resources public webpage. Position descriptions for teachers, counselors, nurses and school psychologists are not yet loaded on the website, but will be available soon.

Collective Bargaining Unit Contracts: There are seven represented bargaining units in the District.

The San Diego Education Association, also known as SDEA, represents all non-management certificated staff. This includes teachers, nurses, counselors, school psychologists to name a few.
Office-Technical and Business Services, also known as OTBS, represents all clerical and IT professionals.
Operations-Support Services, also known as OSS, represents all support staff. This includes custodial, maintenance, warehouse, transportation and food service staff.
Paraeducators, also known as PARA, represents all instructional support staff. This includes classroom and campus assistants, special education assistants,
Administrators Association of San Diego, also known as AASD, represents both Certificated and Classified managers. This group includes staff such as supervisors, principals and vice principals.
Police Officer's Association, also known as POA, represents our uniformed police officers as well as support staff such as dispatchers.

Each group has a collective bargaining agreement that outlines a number of benefits for the employees in that group. With the exception of non- represented managers and confidential employees, you belong to one of these represented groups. Later today, a representative will be here to explain more information to you about your membership in one of these groups.

The Benefits page includes information that is key for new employees to know and understand. Visit this page often for updates.

The Current Substitute and Visiting Teacher Resources site provides information for these employees. Regular monthly employees can also access helpful resources such as user guides for the substitute system.

Understanding your Employment Status and Evaluation Process

Visiting Teachers & Classified Substitutes - May be evaluated at any time by supervising office staff, teachers and site supervisors.
Classified Employees

Probationary - Prior to end of 3rd month & at least by the end of the 5th month
Permanent - per the collective bargaining agreement

Certificated (SDEA) Employees

Policies and Procedures

As an employee of the District, you are responsible for understanding the policies and procedures of employment.

Policy- set by the Board of Education and provides overall vision for the District

As an employee of the District, you are responsible for understanding the policies and procedures of employment.

The Board Policy Book is the Board of Education’s policies related to the functions of the district. These policies are required by state and federal guidelines and provide expectations behavior or employees and students as well as direction for the creation of procedures to implement the policy. The procedure is the specific process used to implement the policy set by the Board. It is important for you to become familiar with these procedures and policies as you undertake your role as an employee of the district.

As a new employee you are responsible for understanding the policies and procedures within the District. To help you with this, you should review the items listed on this page. As an overview, the Policy documents contain information around expectations set by the Board, State or Federal rules. The Procedures section below these policies provides you with information on how the policies are implemented. You may want to pay particular attention to the 7000 Section regarding personnel procedures as it contains important information related to pay and leaves.

Preparing for work: Employee Expectations

As part of your onboarding process discuss the following with your supervisor:

Staff/ Student interaction expectations

Dress and grooming policies (consider safety, heat and professionalism)
Technology use and expectations in your work site (cell phones, computers, etc)
Available training opportunities
School/ Department Safety procedures
Work schedule and absence reporting

As part of your first day of work, be sure to discuss these important topics with your supervisor:

Understand the dress and grooming policies in your school site or department. Your clothing choices should reflect the type of work you do, the level of student interaction and the safety considerations of your position.
Understand both the District policies around use of technology, but understand specifics about your worksite. For instance, email is provided to district employees and is designed to be used for work purposes. Access to technology is also provided to employees for the purposes of work communication and task completion.
The District has training available to employees through the Electronic Registration system (ERO). Ask your supervisor about this training and how you may be able to participate in any of the offerings. In addition, site and department managers may plan trainings at the location that are not listed in ERO.
Schools and departments all have safety and evacuation plans. Be sure to understand those procedures and your role in carrying them out.
Clarify your start and end time. Also be sure to understand your breaks and lunch periods. Discuss with your supervisor the process used at your location for reporting your absences and requests for leave.
As an educational organization, our first duty is to support student learning, therefore we have clear expectations for our staff members with students. Be sure to review

Touching - Respect the personal space of others. Protect yourself by not touching students at any time unless it is a matter of their safety or the safety of others.

Student Communication - While we expect you to be friendly and professional with students, you are not to be their friend. You are the adult. Acknowledge students by their name and do not use pet names. Remain calm when working with students. Raising your voice escalates the situation. Monitor the attention you are giving to students as not to pay too much attention to any one student making them uncomfortable.

Staff Communication - Professionalism Always! Use positive modes of communication and be respectful. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Smile and be friendly. Be collaborative and a positive contributor to the team.

Social Media / Cell phones - Do not provide your personal phone numbers to students or parents. Do not communicate or friend students or parents on social media. Protect yourself!!!

There are 7 bargaining units within the San Diego Unified School District. As District employees you are part of these organizations. The District and the units work together through the collective bargaining process to ensure a positive work environment through workplace integrity, respect, and create safe, professional, and rewarding work environments.

The Labor Relations Department provides all employees and bargaining unit leaders with supports related to the application of the respective collective bargaining agreements. Each contract is located on this website and can be accessed by anyone, 24/7.

Classified Bargaining Unit Introduction

Classified employees perform a wide range of essential work in our public schools. In San Diego Unified, employees are represented by three different units.

Office-Technical and Business Services, (OTBS) Chapter 788 employees include office and clerical work as well as computer services. Jeffrey Anschutz serves as the President for this unit.
