College Guidance

37 of 57

Applying to college

  • It will all be okay :-)
  • Apply broadly & balanced: reach/target/likely
  • Not-so-random things to consider when choosing a college:
  • Food- We all need to eat. Think about meal plans, options on campus and around campus, does the food look edible???
  • Does the campus have clubs or organizations you want to be involved in?
  • Is dorm life at the school what you’re looking for?
  • Does the school offer the major you are interested in? Or maybe multiple majors you are interested in?
  • Big picture…what is going to keep your student active/involved/invested/happy in their college?

*Listen to past alumni speak about their college choice from the SHS Guidance Page http://www.saratogahigh.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?type=d&uREC_ID=164858&pREC_ID=338279

Community College

  • Fantastic option! Do your lower-division work for less cost, then transfer to a 4-year
    • West Valley will pay for your first year in college!
    • ⅓ of UC students transferred from community college!
  • Santa Barbara City College->UCSB, Cuesta->Cal Poly-SLO, etc
  • Great option if you are unsure of major and would like to explore many different courses.
  • To enroll: Must be 18 or have graduated from high school
    • Registration will take place in the spring of your senior year.

41 of 57

UC/CSU

Basic application requirements:

  • Meet the A-G requirements with C’s or better
    • For the 2020–21 through 2023–24 school year, the following postsecondary institutions that will accept, for admission purposes, a transcript with a Pass or No Pass grade instead of a letter grade for an applicant pursuant to Education Code Section 49066.5(b)
    • Check the list of institutions here
  • SAT/ACT is no longer considered for admission to either system
  • Essay prompts (UC only, “PIQ”/Personal Insight Questions)
  • Honors/Awards/Activities (UC only)

42 of 57

Private Colleges/Out of State Publics

  • Generally the same admissions requirements as UC/CSU
    • Most remain test-optional or test-blind this year
  • Likely also need letter(s) of recommendation
  • Personal Statement plus supplemental questions
  • Many look at student activities/community service/work experience
