Where did “Universal Design” come from?

Helps learners with different learning preferences

If a student in an online course has special accommodations, the student and instructor will work together with Disability Services to ensure that course materials meet the student’s needs. This may include transcription of audio content or conversion of written materials to MP3.

However, just like a ramp is useful to bicyclists, closed captioning helps English language learners and those who prefer to read rather than listen to lecture content. Ally helps those with visual impairments listen to written text, but also MP3 files created from text can help students with long commutes study while in the car, and World language translation helps students learn in any language.

Universal design can largely eliminate stigma which has been associated with accommodation models of support by applying strategies for alternative forms of representation and engagement for all students.

Common features of UDL

All learners know and understand the goal

Students build and internalize their own�learning
Timely progress monitoring (formative assessment)

Universal Design for Learning will look a little different in every course, and for every instructor. The content, the type of activities students participate in, and the learning outcomes will all vary, sometimes to a large degree. ��However, there are some common features of a course built using UDL principles. ��All learners know, and understand, the goals of the course broadly, and for each activity. When this happens, they can connect with the content and engage fully. ��There is intentional flexibility for students to consume and engage with content, and demonstrate their knowledge. This could be multiple forms of assessment including quizzes and papers, and it also could also mean having audio/video lectures, content in text form, and sharing slides. ��All students have access to the content they will need to succeed from the very start. This way, students won't fall behind because of inaccessible content, and they can see and plan out their strategy for learning. ��There is room for students to build and internalize their own learning throughout the course. This is hard to measure, but is important in building content. This timely progress monitoring can include formative assessment that students realign their learning.
