Measurement
Convert customary and metric measurements.
Lesson 1.1
Good to Know!
You can measure using the customary system or the metric system. Measurements include length, angles, time, mass, weight and volume.
Some common measurement conversions and facts are shown below.
Determine the unit of measurement you should use in each situation.
a. dimensions of a room in your home in customary units
Use feet to measure the length and width of rooms in a home. Yards are too big and inches are too small.
b. time remaining until school is over
Use hours or minutes to determine the time until school is over.
c. distance from home to the nearest mall
The distance to the mall can be measured in miles or kilometers from your home.
Example 1
Determine the unit of measurement you should use in each situation.
d. amount of milk to buy for a family at the store
Milk is usually sold by gallons or quarts.
e. angle to cut flooring in a bathroom
Degrees will measure the correct angle of the flooring.

Example 2
Choose a reasonable estimate. Explain your reasoning for each choice.
a. length of a pen: 10 cm or 10 m
10 cm. A meter is approximately the length of a yardstick, which is too large for a pen.
b. distance to school on a bus: 20 m or 20 km
20 km. A kilometer is slightly more than half a mile. You would not ride a bus if you only lived 20 meters from school.
c. amount of juice in a juice box: 1 pint or 1 gallon
1 pint. Although 1 pint (which equals 2 cups) might be a bit large for a juice box, 1 gallon (which equals 16 cups) is much too large.
Vocabulary
Conversion
The process of renaming a measurement using different units.
Unit Conversions
• When converting from a larger unit to a smaller unit, MULTIPLY ( × ).
• When converting from a smaller unit to a larger unit, DIVIDE ( ÷ ).
Complete each conversion.
a. 4 yards = _____ feet
Find the conversion factor. 1 yard = 3 feet
Multiply 4 yards by 3. 4(3) = 12
4 yards = 12 feet
Example 3
Complete each conversion.
b. 48 ounces = _____ pounds
Find the conversion factor. 1 pound = 16 ounces
Divide 48 ounces by 16. 48 ÷ 16 = 3
48 ounces = 3 pounds
Example 3 Continued…
Complete each conversion.
c. 3 hours = _____ minutes
Find the conversion factor. 1 hour = 60 minutes
Multiply 3 hours by 60. 3(60) = 180
3 hours = 180 minutes
Example 3 Continued…
Convert 4 kilometers to centimeters.
First convert 4 kilometers 1 kilometer = 1,000 meters
to meters.
Multiply 4 kilometers by 1,000 4(1000) = 4000
4 kilometers = 4,000 meters
Convert 4,000 meters to 1 meter = 100 centimeters
centimeters.
Multiply 4,000 meters by 100. 4000(100) = 400000
4,000 meters = 400,000 centimeters.
4 kilometers = 400,000 centimeters
Example 4
The fourth highest waterfall in the United States is Colonial Creek Falls in Washington. It is 2,584 feet tall.
a. Find its height in inches.
Find the conversion factor. 1 foot = 12 inches
Multiply 2,584 feet by 12. 2584(12) = 31008
Colonial Creek Falls is 31,008 inches tall.
Example 5
The fourth highest waterfall in the United States is Colonial Creek Falls in Washington. It is 2,584 feet tall.
b. Find its height in yards.
Find the conversion factor. 1 yard = 3 feet
Divide 2,584 feet by 3.
Colonial Creek Falls is 861.3 yards tall.
