STEM EXPO
and
Fair
What is a STEM Fair/ Expo?
A STEM fair is an opportunity for you to do an independent science or engineering project (of your choice) following either the scientific method or the engineering design process. Students conduct their research then present their results at a STEM fair.
Scientific Method
The scientific method is a process for experimentation that is used to explore observations and answer questions
Observe | Make observations, what do you want to know about, what do you already know? |
Question | The scientific method starts when you ask a question about something that you observe: How, What, When, Who, Which, Why, or Where? |
Research | You should conduct background research on your topic to learn as much as you can about it |
Hypothesis | A hypothesis is an educated guess about how things work. It is an attempt to answer your question with an explanation that can be tested. |
Experiment | Design and perform an experiment to test the hypothesis. |
Conclusion and Report | Report the outcomes, what happened was your hypothesis correct? |
Engineering Design Process
Ask | What are you trying to do? What is the problem? What needs to be fixed? |
Imagine | Come up with ideas, do some research, has someone else already done some of the work? |
Plan | How are you going to fix the problem? What design will you use? |
Create | Actually build the prototype. |
Test | Does your item work? Do you need to make improvements |
Improve and Share | If needed improve and then share your results. |
