Attendance

Absences

All absences must be verified in one of the following ways:

  • Parents/guardians must call the Attendance Office on the day of the absence: (508) 324-3124.
  • If no call is made, the school will notify the parents/guardians via email on the day of the absence.
  • An allowance of three (3) approved college visits and/or job shadow days in their senior year and two (2) in their junior year will not count toward the eighteen (18) absences. College visits are not allowed during mid-year/final summative assessment days, school dances, or during state or AP testing without prior approval from Administration.

Exceptions to the attendance limit include: Medical documentation for doctor appointments/illness, AP/State testing, bereavements, College Visits, Court Appearances, Driver’s Permit or License Appointments, Field trips, Religious Holidays, Restorative Learning Center (RLC) and Suspensions, all of which will be coded excused.

Attendance Continued…

When a student’s recorded absences reach or exceed 5 days, the following steps will be taken to support the student and family in improving attendance:

5 days of absence: A letter will be sent to the family reminding both the student and caregivers of the attendance policy.

10 days of absences: A letter will be sent to the family, and a meeting will be scheduled with the counselor, student, and caregivers to develop an attendance success plan.

Habitually Truant

A school-aged child is “habitually truant” when not otherwise excused from attendance in accordance with lawful and reasonable school regulations and willfully fails to attend school for more than 9 school days in a semester.

Loss of Credit

Loss of Credit and Warning Letters

Students who exceed eighteen (18) absences a year or an equivalent ratio for classes not meeting every day will be denied credit. Thus, students should not exceed more than eight (8) absences for a semester course. Underclassmen students (Grades 9-11) who lose credit, will have the opportunity to have credit reinstated if they follow the attendance policy the following school year. Students who do not follow the policy the following year, will need to appeal if there is an extenuating circumstance. See LOC Appeals Process below.

  • Loss of Credit will be noted on the student transcript/report card

Loss of Credit Appeals Process

Loss of Credit Appeals Process

Students who wish to appeal denial of credit must do so, in writing, to the Principal, who is the chairperson of the Attendance Appeals Committee. The parent/guardian and student will meet in conference with the committee to discuss and sort out all factors relative to the absences in question.

Factors include:

  • The specific reasons for the absences will be discussed.
  • The student's absenteeism pattern from previous grades also plays a significant role.
  • The student’s present pattern of absenteeism, i.e., single days, same day of the week, same day as friend(s), test or quiz day, etc.
  • The impact of absence on a student's academic performance is a significant consideration.
  • Any other factors that might be perceived as mitigating or extenuating.

Tardiness

School Tardiness

Students entering the building after the 7:25 a.m. bell will be considered tardy. Students who do not report to class by the 7:25 a.m. bell must sign in and obtain a tardy admission slip from the attendance office before going to class. Tardies are tallied on an ongoing basis throughout the school year.

  • The first eight (8) tardies will have no penalty.
  • A lunch retention will be issued if the student arrives at school between 7:25 and 7:45. It is the student's responsibility to check their email and serve the lunch retention within two (2) school days.
  • Students arriving after 7:45 will be issued a detention via email on the ninth (9) and subsequent tardies. It is the student's responsibility to check their email and serve the detention within two (2) school days.
  • Excessive tardiness may result in the student not being able to attend a school-related function or social activities.

Attendance for Extracurricular Activities

Any extracurricular activity is defined as, but not limited to, athletics, academic clubs and teams, intramurals, music groups and performances, plays, and all other events and activities. Students who violate this policy may be subject to disciplinary action and/or loss of academic credit. During the week, a student who is absent on the day of an extracurricular activity may not participate in that activity. Any student entering the building after 7:45 a.m will not be permitted to participate in any extracurricular activity that day. Any student dismissed from school will not be allowed to participate in any extracurricular activity that day unless there is verified documentation. During their suspension, suspended students cannot participate in any activities.

Dismissals

If a parent/guardian wishes to have a student dismissed early from school for any reason, a note, email, or phone call must be given to the school’s attendance office the morning of the day the dismissal is desired. 508-324-3124 or email the Attendance Officer. Written notes will be verified by a phone call to the parent/guardian. Parents/guardians are strongly urged to make medical and dental appointments at times that do not conflict with the school schedule. This procedure is in accordance with MGL Chapter 76, Sections 1A and 1B, Pupil Absence Notification Program. Parents/guardians phone calls or notes do not excuse absences unless stated below.

Students are to go to the health office with a pass from their classroom teacher to be evaluated by the school nurse. The school nurse will then contact the parents/guardians when deemed appropriate. This procedure prevents confusion regarding students’ whereabouts and expedites appropriate medical intervention.

Each offense will result in one (1) Saturday School (8:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.) and parental/guardian notification via email. Students who are truant from class or school will receive a zero for any assignment or assessment missed.
