Strategies to Support our Students

7

7

Considerations:

  • Faculty choice / academic freedom
  • Zero cost is preferable, but not widely available
  • Low cost creates access to course materials than full cost materials

8 of 16

LOW COST OPTIONS AVAILABLE

8

8

  • Rentals provide term-limited hard copy books and save 25% and up

  • Used books save 25% of new book cost

  • Buyback may provide 10% to 50% refund IF the title has been re-adopted

  • Store discounts for student employees save 10% to 100% (most of our stores employ hundreds of students annually for ‘rush’ work)

  • Price matching saves approximately 10% on quantity-available titles

  • Library reserve copies save 100% for limited number of students

  • Digital access I.A. adoptions and multi-format E.A. programs have high impact

TWO PROGRAMS DOMINATE SAVINGS

9

9

  • IMMEDIATE ACCESS: traditional major publisher course materials digitally delivered, first day free access, opt out by add/drop date, dramatic discounts

    • I.A. programs are by class and are faculty choices not campus programs
    • Publishers agree to the lowest possible prices for the opportunity to have students experience the free trial period with an opt-out choice. Opt-in is 200 years old and publishers do not discount for this.

  • EQUITABLE ACCESS: is a flat fee program for all of each student’s required course materials for a term

    • Hundreds of colleges and universities across the country have implemented these programs to provide the lowest cost possible to students with many other advantages for equity and academic success.
    • This is usually a campus-wide program although pilots on our campuses can be by cohort or have an opt-out choice.

  • Both programs are available from our campus stores but there are various names for the programs. I.A. and E.A. are generic terms. Store can collaborate to identify and reach out to faculty candidates.

IMMEDIATE/INCLUSIVE ACCESS

10

10

  • IMMEDIATE ACCESS: traditional major publisher course materials digitally delivered, first day free access, opt out by add/drop date, dramatic discounts

  • Students who cannot afford to pay all expenses have equal and immediate access and can pay later

  • Students report they learned how to use vibrant, interactive materials that adapt to their learning curve while they decide during the free trial

  • Faculty who do not want to abandon their quality choices keep them

  • The campus store takes the burden of negotiating prices

  • The campus store delivers so students on financial aids, scholarships, Veterans Affairs, CA State Rehab are not discriminated against

SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMS

11

11

  • SDSU Aztec Shops saved students $8.4 million with I.A. alone all in one academic year

  • Fresno now has over 80% of all students enrolled in an Immediate Access class

  • I.A. programs are the bulk of course materials savings across the nation

  • All of our 23 campus stores have I.A. programs available

  • Our top four campus I.A. programs (San Diego, Fresno, Northridge and Long Beach) save over $100 per FTE

I.A. IMPACT DOCUMENTED

12

12

  • The Social Science Research Lab at SDSU surveyed students after 2016 pilot
    • 84% felt they received sufficient information about program aspects including opt-out
    • 97% of the students found value in the program
    • 79% felt the price was a good value because it offered reduced rates
    • 87% felt the program benefitted them academically
    • 71% said it helped them get a better grade
    • SSRL is conducting new surveys to illustrate updated responses

  • 2023 Study by University of New Hampshire research scientist Dr. Michael Moore
    • IA impact on success rate up 2.82 % (1.84% male and 4.59% female)
    • Retention rate in I.A. sections up 3%
    • Course completion rate up 15.58% (18.54% male and 13.30% female)

EQUITABLE ACCESS

13

13

  • E.A. is a flat fee program for all of each student’s required course materials for a term

  • Flat fee programs have been around for many years but have become popular the past 15 years

  • ALL of the materials required by instructors are provided to each student for a low flat fee

  • Students do not choose the format and usually digital access is provided to keep costs down

  • Significant savings for students and one-stop acquisition via the LMS

  • Academic freedom for faculty who have the expertise to choose what is best

  • In California, U.C. Davis piloted E.A. three years ago; they have gone from a $199 per term charge to $169

  • SDSU launched E.A. for the 2022-23 academic year. They charge by unit enrolled.

  • CSUN and East Bay have conducted campus-funded E.A. for freshmen

14 of 16

WHO ARE WE MISSING?

14

14

  • More than 50% of the faculty who select any (free or commercial) materials do NOT want to change their selections

  • These are the majority of full-time, tenure or tenure-track faculty who are the experts in their narrow discipline and know what they want

  • All of the major publishers have discounted programs available for their traditional hard copy titles

  • These discounts are dramatic and are based on opt-out

  • Faculty do NOT have to change their expert choice of content or publisher
