  • Brown shiny scutum without strong yellow lateral margin
  • R4+5 straight
  • hind tibia usually without orange [bill dean, bugguide]
  • Unlike Syrphus, abdomen shinier, often more elongate. Abdominal markings and scutellum often darkened more than in Syrphus spp.

Syrphus

  • Brown shiny scutum with faint pair of stripes
  • Wide black abdomen with yellow spots reaching lateral margin except in S. sexmaculatus (Southern), S. opinator (S. intricatus) (both western), in which the T2 markings are widely separated. These latter Syrphus species have a more yellowish scutellum, particularly along the margin, than similar Eupeodes spp.
  • Straight R4+5
  • Eyes usually not hairy
  • Antennae usually dark
  • abdominal bands relatively straight margined anteriorly and posteriorly, and relatively parallel-sided and oval when broken medially (unlike e.g. Eupeodes in which they are more quadrilateral, angular medially)
  • scutum less metallic than Eupeodes

Scaeva affinis (formerly pyrastri)

  • Wide abdomen black with white comma-shaped abdominal spots not reaching lateral margin
  • R4+5 curved into cell r2+3
  • unlike similar Lapposyrphus and Eupeodes spp., the T2 spots are anteriorly concave; scutellum relatively dark
  • frons protrudes a lot more, and dark vertex less extensive, than in similar eupeodes volucris; unlike Eupeodes volucris, scutellum without posterior margin much lighter

Western, rarely in east

Scaeva selenitica is possibly established in North Carolina, and differs in that abdominal stripes are transverse, not oblique
