  • Vizcaya is a National Historic Landmark and museum. Before it became a museum, it was the home of James Deering.
  • James Deering was the vice-president of International Harvester, an American agricultural manufacturing company, or a company that made machines for farming.
  • Vizcaya is made up of three parts: the Main House, Formal Gardens, and Village.
  • The construction of the Main House began in 1914 and ended in 1916.
  • The Formal Gardens were completed in 1922.
  • Vizcaya’s design is inspired by countryside Italian villas with a subtropical, caribbean influence.

  • Key Focus: Students will engage with Vizcaya’s historical collection through observation and discussion of art elements and principles.
  • Students will take charge of the discussed through inquiry-based learning.
  • Students will learn and practice the design elements and principles.
  • Students will participate in watercolor “ en plein-air” painting in the gardens.

Distinct Art Periods: Renaissance

  • Art and political movement (or "rebirth) following the Middle Ages, from the 1300's to the 1600's.​
  • Characterized by realism and naturalism, depicting people in a true-to-life way.
  • Art usually features portraits and religious paintings.
  • Incorporated elements of perspective, depth, and emotion.

Distinct Art Periods: Rococo

  • Art movement in Europe from the 1700's to the 1770's .​
  • Features dramatic and ornamental style of architecture, particularly gold finishes.
  • Artists used curved lines, decorative flowers and shells, asymmetry, and light colors, such as pastel, white, and gold.

Distinct Art Periods: Neoclassical

  • Art movement in Europe beginning in 1760's, lasting until 1840's and 1850's​.
  • Featuring inspiration from Ancient Greek and Roman culture.
  • Neoclassicism was a reaction against Rococo style
  • Artists focused on lines (instead of color), frontality and closed compositions (instead of too many figures in the background), and classical subject matter.

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is over 100 years old. It is important that we work together to preserve this historic estate. During our visit, we must:

    • Keep our hands to ourselves
    • Leave food and drinks outside of the house
    • Not use flash when taking photos
    • Use our inside voices
    • Be aware of our surroundings
    • Leave our bags at school or on the bus

Students will be welcomed and divided into groups at the Admissions Booth. Staff will collect lunches and bags.

10:00 AM Visit the Main House and Formal Gardens
