Types of Innovation

  • Technological innovation is largely viewed as a top-down proprietary process in which technologies, products and services are created to increase profit.

  • Open-innovation is largely viewed as an inclusive set of internal and external information sources and processes designed to drive innovation.

  • Social innovation is largely conceived as a bottom-up and top-down set of processes in which actor-networks are empowered to garner resources, build infrastructure, and generate new practices to achieve societal goals.

Social innovation is a new configuration of practices designed to facilitate social change and improve the human condition.

It is based on developing and institutionalizing new theories, processes and practices that build organizational capacity and empower actors to address social challenges.

It involves mobilizing and building networks to achieve societal goals through a decentralized approach involving a combination of bottoms-up and top-down processes and practices.

The Blind Spot in Leadership

The blind spot for most leaders (and their stakeholders) is “in not seeing or understanding the full process of “social reality formation” (p.6) in terms of how experience is cognized, accessed and translated into knowledge and action at the tacit, behavioral, relational (group/organization) and system levels.

Developing a Local Theory of Change

  1. Identify 3-4 behaviors/actions/strategies that leaders can take to accomplish your object. Write your strategies using the “If-Then” method. Record on Blue Sheet.
