Healthcare: Exploring the Impact of Simulations as a Learning Tool

January 22, 2024

Host: Robin Long, Provincial VT Education Consultant & Marc Vézina, RÉCIT VT

13 of 35

What is simulation training?

Simulation is the artificial representation of a complex real-world process with sufficient fidelity with the aim to facilitate learning through immersion, reflection, feedback, and practice minus the risks inherent in a similar real-life experience.

  • It is a technique, not a technology
  • Student-centred learning technique
  • Engages empathy because of a lived experience
  • Encourages higher order & critical thinking - often situating learners in the analyse-evaluate-create realm within a learning taxonomy

14 of 35

Types of Simulations

  • Electronic patients
  • Computer patients
  • Standardized patient
  • Part-task trainers
  • Verbal
  • In situ

15 of 35

Why is it an effective learning tool?

Improves:

  • individual and group (team) performance
  • Problem-solving skills, self-reliance and overall knowledge

Links previous knowledge to new knowledge, scaffolding the learning

Repetition; Low-stakes environment

Simulation Pedagogy

Kolb experiential learning

Cognitive Load

Learner can experience stimulus overload and have limited working memory

Educators consider learning goals, learner expectations and the amount of new knowledge

Socio Cognitive Theory

Learning rooted in social experience through observation and modeling

Educator creates learning situations

Guiding questions

  • What do students in the program need to know about this topic? Will it better prepare them to be fulfilled as a tradesperson?
  • Will this topic affect how you teach your trade? Explain.
  • How will this topic affect how you:
    • Plan your classes
    • Organise your classes
    • Conduct you classes
    • Manage the students
    • Evaluate the performance of the students
  • What strengths or affordances do you see in relation to this topic?

Technology Inspiration

Virtual reality seems the obvious suggestion when it comes to simulation.Watch the recording of the in the November 13th Technology Inspiration capsule.

Set Up Branching Scenarios Via Online Forms

Build a scenario that continues in a different way, with positive or negative consequences, depending on answers provided.

The information is provided via a written, audio or video support.

Ex:

Analyze the information in the patient’s file;Decide how to complete a procedure depending on the choice made;

Review a procedure to administer first aid.

How:

Plan all the possible branching options of the scenario.

Enter the information in separate questions.

Determine the branching options for each answer.
