Dual Enrollment in Santa Ana
The Beginning
Dual Enrollment opportunities began in Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) through Middle College High School (MCHS) in the Fall of 1997.
In November 2002, the SAUSD Board of Education adopted Board Policy BP 6146.11(a) known as Alternative Credits Toward Graduation, to meet individual student needs by broadening high school graduation credit attainment. This newly adopted policy was established to create alternatives to completing high school course requirements.
For the first six years after MCHS opened its doors, ninth graders were not allowed to participate in the program. Thanks to BP 6146.11, in 2003 freshmen were introduced to the Early College Program.
Dual Enrollment in Santa Ana
The Transition
Prior to the passing of AB 1705 (2022), many SAUSD students would not complete their higher education goals due to the inability to access and successfully pass college-level English.
In 2015, SAUSD began collaborating with SAC in an effort to increase college persistency rates. Three pilot high schools were selected with four sections of ENGL-101. This initiative began to assist lower socio-economic and minority students to successfully complete ENGL-101.

In 2022-23, SAUSD won a total of 1.1 million from the CDE to enhance the dual enrollment program across 11 high schools including alternative education.

Our goal is to integrate more dual enrollment as CTE Capstones that build on foundational knowledge from HS CTE pathways.
