Why give students choice and voice?

bit.ly/voicechoice2020

7 of 38

Research says...

“… giving students a choice increases positive emotions, is important because it teaches decision making, increases their interest in learning, and increases learning. When products are differentiated, students are given a choice on how they demonstrate mastery of the standards. By giving students a choice, the teacher is developing responsibility and ownership in the students. Students take a greater responsibility in their learning because they have a vested interest in what they are producing.” (Source)

That means...

  • Student choice builds ownership in the learning … [and] enforces true differentiation. (Source)
  • Student-centered learning engages students in their own success – and incorporates their interests and skills. (Source)

“...when students have the ability to choose the kinds of topics they are most passionate about, they can achieve great things.”

- High school student

12 of 38

Students choose their learning

  • Offer a list of topics or prompts
  • Genius hour or hobby projects
  • Keep standard(s) in mind
  • Give choice when possible and appropriate

Too many choices?

Don’t offer them all at once!

Start off by giving 2-3 options and build up from there.

Student Choice: Medium

  • Students select a way to show their learning.
  • Realize students may not know how to show what they know
  • Before allowing choice, give instruction on how to make an appropriate choice; what makes the most sense?

Art

  • Draw something of interest to you.
  • You can draw on paper and take a picture.
  • You can use Google Draw and use the shapes to create an image (like we did with the ninjas).
  • Place an image of your creation on this slide.
  • I challenge you to create something that is inspired by the fair. Post it in your window.

Learn something new

Have you ever wanted to learn how to sew? Knit? Do a skateboard trick? Do a backbend? A dance?

Well, maybe now is the time you can learn it.

Add your image or video to this slide.

Consider these ideas:

  • How might you use this?
  • How could it be useful when we return to our school buildings?
  • How might you use this to assess your students?
  • Can you share other tools or platforms to explore?
