WHAT CAN THE WEA DO FOR ME?

DISCIPLINE REPRESENTATION

Unfortunately, being an educator

has become, at times, a vulnerable

occupation. Having an angry parent,

a disgruntled student, or having to defend yourself against accusations,

are situations that teachers can find themselves in when they are least expecting it.When this happens, it can be scary and confusing. When you are a member of the WEA , we are there with you to help you understand your rights. We have the training and experience to advocate for you, and ensure you are being treated fairly.

Working conditions are much more complicated and nuanced than what is stated in contract language. Although non-paying dues teachers are still technically covered for anything under contract language, they are not when it comes to other issues that may arise with their working conditions. Class sizes, teacher workload expectations, and even the physical classroom space, are all potential issues where the contract may not offer protections. The WEA can be your voice to advocate for you if these conditions are not ideal.

The WEA President has bi-monthly meetings with other Southwest Metro Local Unions in districts of similar size and demographics to Wayzata. Districts whose educators are facing some of the exact same issues that we might face in Wayzata. This gives our local WEA the opportunity to discuss and collaborate on things from negotiations to policies and practices that are best for educators and students. There is always more power in numbers. Being a part of the local union also opens up more opportunities for professional development that may not be offered within the district.
