Who He Sailed For

John Cabot sailed for England. He asked many countries for permission to explore but they all refused. Finally, King Henry VII of England gave him permission to go on a expedition.

Background Information on Explorer

John Cabot was born in 1450 in Genoa, Italy. He was born Giovanni Caboto. In English it is John Cabot. Before he became an explorer he was a mapmaker and a trader. He moved to Bristol, England in 1483. He was married and had three sons. He became an explorer to find a sea route to China. He did this because the Turks were heavily taking the routes to China.

Since Turks controlled trading routes, Cabot tried to find a route by sea to avoid heavy taxes. He asked for permission to sail and England gave him this. Cabot thought that he could sail across the west to reach China. They sailed in a ship called Matthew.

Information About Your Explorer's Discovery

When John Cabot first landed in Canada he thought it was China. He is known as the first explorer to reach North America. He kept on going and reached Newfoundland. A tribe named the Beothuks were living there. After landing he kept on going south to reach China. When he reached the Saint Lawrence River, Cabot thought he had found the passage. He had to turn back because of lack of food. In his last voyage he was never seen or found again.
