Hello Middle School Families,

I am always amazed that another month has passed so quickly.  May is when I tend to notice the most growth and maturity from our students.  I always look forward to this time.  Middle School can be a difficult time for so many reasons. Physically and developmentally our children are growing and changing at a rapid pace. They often struggle between being a child but yearning to be an adult. Students today, more than ever, have so many outside forces influencing their thoughts and actions. Sometimes  they are not quite ready for it. Despite all of that, I see students thriving every day.  I love this aspect of my job. Watching students grow and change is what makes being an educator so rewarding.

I wanted to talk a little bit about our board's adopted attendance policy.   We are required by NYS to send a letter to parents when their child hits a benchmark determined to be above the limit set by the state.  Our attendance letter is automatically generated by Schooltool.  The letter is not intended to cause alarm; rather, it is to inform parents that their child has hit the limit or is above the limit while explaining the implications of that.  The letter also provides some helpful information to  improve attendance. If you ever have any questions regarding this policy, please feel free to reach out to us.  You can find the full policy on the school webpage.

Thank you,

Melissa Addy

COUNSELOR’S CORNER

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! Mental Health Awareness Month was established in 1949 to increase awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness in Americans’ lives and to celebrate recovery from mental illness. For more than 20 years, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has recognized Mental Health Awareness Month (MHAM) every May to increase awareness about the vital role mental health plays in our overall health and well-being and provide resources and information to support individuals and communities who may need mental health support.

Better Together for Mental Health is hosting a FREE event to celebrate MHAM. Stop by Stewart Park on Saturday, May 11 from 11am-3pm for mindful movement, dance, live music, street performances, workshops, indulge in free food offerings and much more. Click here for more information.

The Mental Health Association in Tompkins County also offers events and support to promote mental health in our community. Click here for more information.
