Charge & Key Deliverables

  • Help further define what welcoming, supportive, and safe means to students and families in relationship to the learning environment.
  • Make recommendations about an enhanced suite of student wellness and safety tools and supports.
  • Inform development of a baseline continuum of supports, services, and practices - including a multi-year timeline and budget - necessary to meet the Guiding Principles of Parameter 7.
    • Provide recommendations to the District on how to measure progress towards the Parameter 7 Guiding Principles.
  • Inform development of procedures to support implementation of Board Policy 4311, School Safety and Security Services responsive to changes to state legislation, community engagement, and recommendations and the work of the 2021-22 School Resource Officer (SRO) Task Force.
  • Inform and support broad and targeted engagement with students, families, and community to ensure the voices of those most impacted are included in the task force deliberations and final recommendations to the Superintendent.

Subcommittee Questions - GENERAL

  • What type of recommendations can we make?
  • Does the whole committee have to be in agreement with our recommendations before we submit to the board? Is there a whole vote done by the committee or does each subgroup present its own findings/recommendation directly to the board?
  • Will the assigned sub committees be meeting separately to address issues and come up with solutions and suggestions?
  • If so will all members be involved and informed about it?
  • Will there be specific duties or assignments for members of the subcommittees?
  • What are the main areas of concern under each subcommittee? For example, what all will we cover under the Mental Health subcommittee? It would help if members receive a detailed list or summary of the topics/ issues to be addressed, for reference sake.
  • Also, if there are no restrictions and if it does not violate any rules of privacy, I would like to know who the other members of my subcommittee are as its difficult to keep track of all the names and members.
  • It would be nice if the broad outline of the different subcommittees and the issues they address could be shared among all members, in the form of slides or notes. This will help us remember the pressing concerns and also help us do research and be prepared before meetings.

  • How can improve our Multilingual Learner programs?
  • What positions or position does the district have or can create to welcome, support and share correct tools for students to thrive?

  • Current ways we are helping our multilingual learners, undocumented, and first generation students feel safe and welcome in our schools and community
  • How are our multilingual learners doing compared to other districts?
  • Data representation of different racial backgrounds in our district

Questions:

  • What are some of the ways we can make resources more available to teenagers?
    • The main mental health rising concerns is with teenagers, and how many students report feeling better after SEL or Mental Health talks in school.
  • What Mental Health issues do you deal with most frequently in each school age (Elementary, Middle, High School)?
  • Which Mental Health issues does the District believe are the greatest threat to personal or large scale School Day Student Wellness and Safety? What supports are in place to deal with these at this time?
  • How are we currently balancing mass scale events at school (such as lockdowns, emergency issues, other), and how do you feel the latest research suggests that affects Mental Health? And as follow-up, what ways can address these issues better, be prepared and also protect children’s Mental Health?

  • What are we doing to help protect the safety of children who are more at risk due to circumstance or other-ability?
  • What Mental Health Safety & Wellness Issues does the District/staff think could use additional attention for the best care in our District?

  • Online activity is Intense on teenager mental health! It’s intense on adult mental health, but especially on those without fully developed Frontal Lobes. What can we do from a a School perspective to give their brains time away as possible?

Data Request:

  • A flowchart of responses to various Mental Health related situations, such as report of suicidal ideation or violent incidences, threats of violence from internal or external sources. Then I would like to analyze whether we are truly able to follow these, and whether the steps make sense. Identifying the weakest links and boundary cases.

  • Research on Mental Health and Pandemic

  • Research on how Global Issues like Climate Change, Government Insecurities, Environmental / Ecosystem, Job Forecasts/Economics are affecting Student Mental Health.
  • Research on what programs specifically reduce anxiety & depression in each level (elementary, middle, high school)

  • How many staff members are in the NSD Safety and Security team, what are their relationship with SRO's at the High School?
  • I'd like to move forward with topics and ideas on how we can make the SRO program more efficient at the High Schools - but I'm not even sure where we are at with the SRO Program as a committee. Does the whole committee have to be in agreement with our recommendations before we submit to the board? Is there a whole vote done by the committee or does each subgroup present its own findings/recommendation directly to the board?
  • What safety and security measures are working in the district?
  • Can the SRO program be expanded to other high schools/or middle schools in the district?

Data Request:

  • Let's review the last SRO Task Force and the Results of that group that. If we are going to pull data and research, let's make sure it's relevant to WA State and surrounding states - it doesn't make sense to gather data on security and/or SRO's that pertain to districts that have Police Departments working strictly for the district alone.
  • How many surrounding districts have SROs? Perhaps survey data from the Northshore SD community about their concerns for safety and security in NSD schools.
  • What do the communities think about security and/or SRO's and the schools (mainly the High Schools).
  • How do other High Schools feel that have had their SRO program cut in the last several years? What worked, what didn't work.
  • Data on school how they report safety concerns, discipline, and threats. Do all schools report consistently to give accurate data?

  • Trains EPrep coordinators, monitors and assists with drills, manages Rapid Responder mapping system, provides training on RR, ACT, Evac Chair, Easy Alert.
  • Eprep Supplies: helps Eprep site staff manage the supplies and storage sheds/containers. Bulk purchase coordination for safety supplies, (example: Stop the Bleed kits bought by PTAs)?
  • Assists schools with updating Emergency Operations Plans annually, and with setting up EOC (Emergency Operations Center)at Admin if needed.
