  • Receive college credit for what you already know and avoid sitting through college courses that you don’t need

Some Facts about CLEP

  • Take CLEP exam at official CLEP test center (IVCHS is a test center)
  • Exams contain multiple choice questions
  • Takes about 90-120 minutes to complete, depending on exam
  • Can take the exam anytime of year, anytime you want
  • Receive your scores immediately
  • Anyone age 13 & older can take an exam
  • Can take as many exams as you want to attempt

Why should I consider CLEP?

  • Saves you time from sitting through introductory college courses in your first year or two of college
  • May allow you to take a lighter load in college because you’ll already have some credits
  • Could allow you to finish college earlier
  • Saves you $$$$!

Some scenarios of when CLEP could be considered

After finishing an accelerated, honors, or AP course

  • Take it while the content is fresh
  • Allowed to take both the CLEP and AP exam to hedge your chances of earning credit

Examples:

  • US History
  • College Algebra

If you are naturally gifted or strong in an area, or you have been studying something on your own and know a lot about it

Modern States

Everything related to the course is free

Courses are self-paced where you work on them as you have time

Modern States will pay your exam fee if you complete their course to study

What does CLEP cost?

  • $95 exam fee - If you complete the Modern States study course, they will provide you with a free voucher so that you don’t have to pay the exam fee

  • IVC District 321 is also able to offer vouchers to waive the exam fee - students may talk to their counselor about this

  • $20 test center fee
    • IVCHS is a registered test center and does not charge current IVC students the test center fee
    • ICC is also a registered test center and does not charge current ICC students the test center fee

Steps to complete if you are interested:

  1. Read more about CLEP to know what to expect
  2. Verify that the college you are thinking of attending will accept the specific CLEP exam
  3. Decide if you will use the Modern States study course to prepare and receive the voucher -or- if you will prepare for the exam on your own
  4. Register for the CLEP exam of your choice
  5. Email bgeltmaker@ivcschools.com or talk to your counselor to schedule a time to test at IVCHS
