PANCH KALYANAK

PREFACE

  • Panch means five and Kalyanak means betterment of the soul.
  • The five important events in the life of Tirthankars are

considered as Panch Kalyanak.

  • In all there are 120(24x5) Kalyanaks.
  • The days on which they fall are called Kalyanak Tithis.
  • They are celebrated as days of religious importance.These days

are according to the Jain Panchang.

  • The spot where the Tithankar’s Kalyanak happened is called

Kalyanak Bhumi.

  • We bind a lot of punya karmas by performing puja (Bhakti) on

Kalyanak Tithis.

  • After every Kalyanak, all the Devs celebrate an 8 day Mahotsav.
  • After the Kalyanaks the world gets lightened up and Naraki souls also get happiness.

1. CHYAVAN KALYANAK

Q1. What is Chyavan Kalyanak?

A1. When soul of Tirthankar comes into his

mother’s womb, it is called Chyavan Kalyanak.

Q2. What does Indra Maharaja recite at this point?

A2. Indra Maharaja recites ‘Namutthhunam

Sootra’ in praise of Bhagwan.

Q3.What does Bhagwan’s mother see after this?

A3. After this Bhagwan’s mother sees the 14

auspicious dreams.

2. a) JANMA KALYANAK

Q1. What is Janma Kalyanak?

A1. Birth of Tirthankar is called Janma Kalyanak.

Q2. Which Devis celebrate this event?

A2. 56 Dikkumaris come with many other Devis

and celebrate this event.

Q3. What does Indra Maharaja do?

A3. Indra Maharaja makes 5 forms of himself

and carries Bhagwan to Meru Parvat.

3. a) DIKSHA KALYANAK

Q1. Who requests the Tirthankar to take Diksha?

A1. 1 year before the Diksha Kalyanak a Lokantik

Dev(a kind of Dev) requests the Tirthankar to

take Diksha.

Q2. What does Bhagwan distribute among the

people and for how much time?

A2. a) Bhagwan distributes 1 crore 8 lakh gold coins

daily to the people for 1 year. This is called

Varshidaan.

b) Bhagwan goes to the place of taking Diksha

in a grand procession.

3. b) DIKSHA KALYANAK

Q3. Describe the course of events after Bhagwan

reaches the place of taking Diksha.

A3. a) After reaching there, Bhagwan removes all the

jewellery from his body and performs Panchamusti

Loch. Also, Indra Maharaja puts Dev Dushya on

Bhagwan’s shoulder.

b) Then Bhagwan recites ‘Karemi Bhante Sootra.’

At this moment, Bhagwan attains

‘Manah Paryava gyan.’

4. a) KEVAL GYAN KALYANAK

Q1. Describe Bhagwan’s sadhu life.

A1. During sadhu life, Bhagwan performs great

tapas, kayotsarg ,meditation and suffers

from extreme conditions.

Q2.What does Bhagwan attained after it?

A2. Bhagwan attained keval gyan (absolute

knowledge) in which he gains knowledge

of the 3 Loks and 3 Kals.

Q3. What do the Devs create? After this what does

Bhagwan establish?

A3. a) Devs create a samosaran in form of 3 layers

where Bhagwan delivers Deshna(divine sermon).

b) Then Bhagwan establishes Chaturvidh Sangh in

the form of sadhu, sadhvi, shravak and shravika.

c) Then Bhagwan spends the rest of his life in a

luxurious way without having any attatchement

towards it.

5. NIRVAN KALYANAK

Q1. What does Nirvaan Kalyanak mean?

A1. Nirvaan means ’final death’. Now Bhagwan

does not need to be reborn. This day is

called Nirvaan Kalyanak.

Q2. Who performs the final rites of Bhagwan’s

dead body?

A2. Indras arrive and perform the final rites of

Bhagwan’s dead body.(Agnisanskaar- setting

Bhagwan’s dead body on fire)

Q3. Who becomes sad on Bhagwan’s death?

A3. All mankind and the Devs and Devis become

sad and cry bitterly on Bhagwan’s death.
