Building & Leading a Bloc
-Building a bloc is the most important part of a conference, as you will work with them to write your resolution
-From opening speeches as well as prior research, identify countries that may have a similar policy to you.
-An Unmoderated Caucus is the time to begin assembling your bloc.
-When an Unmod begins, move around the room and discuss possible solutions with like-minded delegates.
-Chairs will move around the room and listen in to different blocs.
-Be sure that the chair knows your ideas and sees your leadership, but do not just start talking when the chair is nearby. Chairs want to see depth in proposals as well.
Building & Leading a Bloc(cont.)
-If you want to lead a bloc, moderate the discussion
-The first unmod will often just be about introducing your solutions in particular
-Such a discussion will need a moderator to add comments on what is good, manage time, and decide who should speak
-Chairs especially appreciate when a delegate encourages a more soft-spoken delegate to share their ideas.
-Often times, there will be overpowering and aggressive delegates called gavel hunters. It may be difficult to share your ideas if there is a gavel hunter in your bloc
-If there are overpowering delegates, you may want to leave your bloc
-However, you can also derail gavel hunters by questioning their ideas
Building & Leading a Bloc(cont.)
-The eventual goal of your bloc is to devise a resolution.
-Pick the soundest ideas from all your bloc members to include in your resolution
-Always add sub-clauses to address funding, affiliated organizations, etc.
-Being on the speaker’s list from a bloc, no matter how small, is always a huge bonus in the eyes of the chair
-Leading/Moderating the bloc is one way to get to the speakers list
-Providing the best solutions or working on the resolution most also helps
-Make sure to be vocal about your contributions because in the end it is your fellow bloc members that get to decide who is on the speaker’s list.
-Bloc members want a strong speaker who knows the resolution well to be on the speaker’s list
