Types of Context Clues

1. synonym or definition: words that mean the same as the word you don't know

You must masticate, or chew, your food thoroughly, so you don't choke.

2. antonym: words that mean the opposite as the unfamiliar word

I wanted a dress that was periwinkle, not lavender.

3. Explanation: words that give more information about the unfamiliar word

I came in the penultimate place in the race. But hey, it could have been worse. I could have been dead last.

4. sentence role: the way the word is used

The plant was clearly dead. Its desiccated look told me no one had watered it.
