Dancing Raisins

Tips:

  1. Fill a glass 1/2 full with soda (so it doesn’t overflow later). Put the glass in the tray (in case it overflows).
  2. Drop raisins (about 6) into the glass. Be patient. It can take a minute or two for them to start moving.
  3. Later, add 1.5 tsp of baking soda-stir to dissolve. Observe. Then SLOWLY add vinegar so it doesn’t overflow.

Teaching points:

When you first drop the raisins in the soda they sink to the bottom of the glass because they are more dense than the soda.

Carbon dioxide bubbles attach to the rough surface of the raisin and act like tiny floatation devices (buoyancy).

Vinegar and baking soda react, forming more carbon dioxide.

Once the bubbles pop, the raisins sink again (change in density).

Rainbow Milk

Tips to Remember (Watch the Video):

  • Use whole milk, just a thin layer to cover the surface of the plate, and let it

settle.

  • Add just a few drops of food coloring near the center of the milk.
  • First touch the tip of a clean cotton swab to the center of the milk.
  • Then dip the cotton swab into dish soap and touch it to the same area (center) of the milk–hold it lightly there.

Teaching points:

Dish soap breaks the surface tension of the milk, causing the fats and proteins to spread out and push the food coloring away.

Dish soap molecules also act as mediators, attaching to both the fat and water molecules, which causes the fat to break down into smaller droplets.

Bring fresh whole milk!
