• Independent In-Class Work Time.

VOCABULARY

猜猜看 (cāi cāi kàn = Guess and See!

• Divide into teams. Each team sends one Guesser to the front of the class with their back to the board.
• A word or phrase will appear on the board behind the Guessers. The Guessers try to guess the word first, but can’t look at it!
• Team members must help, but cannot say the word! (And can only speak in Chinese!)
• Winning team gets Awesome Cards!

Heads Up!

Write 5 review words (that the class has already learned) on the post-its. Combine together into one pile.

Put the word on your forehead, then guess it! Each player will have two minutes to guess as many cards as possible.

Set a timer for two minutes and have one player hold up a card to their forehead without looking at it. The other players will yell out clues for the first player. The first player will continue to guess who is on their card until correct or until they decide to pass.

Repeat until the two minutes is complete. The player with the most correct guesses wins!

“老师说”: Teacher Says

• Stand up and follow the teacher’s instructions (like Simon Says). The teacher will say “老师说”, and then a vocab word.
• Perform the correct action that corresponds to that vocab word, but only after “老师说” is said.
• Players are eliminated if they don’t perform the correct action.

Picture Word Practice!

• Look at the pictures
• Ask your partner about a picture word; they have to find the right picture the fastest!
• Use the pictures to make sentences using that picture word with your partner!
• With a partner, put 3 pictures together to tell a story (beginning, middle, end)!

Hot Potato (热土豆 = rè tǔ dòu)

• Get in a circle with a toy object
• Pick ONE theme (colors, hobbies, countries, school stuff, etc.)
• You say one word, then throw the toy at someone else. Can’t repeat words
• Whoever can’t say the word quickly is out!
• Last person standing wins!

Word Search (找词游戏)

• In teams, search for the vocabulary words in the Word Search handout!
• Words can aligned found in any direction (top, left, right, diagonal) except backwards.
• There’s a list of words at the bottom of the sheet.
• Whichever team finds the most words wins!

VERBA: the language building game

• Each player draws seven white VERBA noun cards.
• The player who most recently celebrated a birthday begins play as the first judge.
• The judge draws a colored VERBA card and reads the fill-in-the-blank phrase out loud.
• The judge then places the sentence card on the table for all players to see.
• Each player (other than the judge) completes the sentence by passing a white card from their hand, face down, to the judge.
• The judge then shuffles the white cards he or she has received and shares each white card by reading aloud the answer with the sentence card. (Be sure to say the sentence in the correct form.)
• The judge selects the best response and gives the winning player that sentence card. That players gets a point!
• Place all white noun cards in the round into a discard pile.
• Each player draws one additional white card so that he/she has seven cards.

Whiteboard Attack: VOCAB

• Use the whiteboards to handwrite Chinese characters and phrases
• also write tones and definition!
• Focus on new words or challenging words you don’t know (i.e. words that on the test…)
• Good idea to grind out (write out over and over again) certain hard words!
• Work solo, or quiz each other in pairs!

Whiteboard Attack: GRAMMAR

• Use the whiteboards to handwrite sentences using new and/or challenging grammar structures
• use your packets or the CLQ website to find and understand these structures
• Make sure you understand the pattern and the sentence word order of the structure. Important!
• Good idea to grind out (write out multiple sentences) certain challenging structures!

Grammar Tic Tac Toe (三连琪)

• Play TIC TAC TOE using the sheet
• Each person takes turns
• Write in grammar structures with a blank sheet
• To choose a square, you MUST say a sentence using the grammar structure in that square
• If your sentence is not grammatically correct, you cannot choose that square!
• After you’re finished, flip the sheet over and start again!

Grammar Fight!

• Line up in teams facing each other
• Each person must use the structure on the board to say a sentence
• grammar must be correct
• points must be true, logical, and responsive
• Then go to the back of the line; repeat again
• The team with the best structures and the best points wins! 牛！

Infinite Grammar

• Line up in teams facing each other
• Talk endlessly! (Ask each other questions, etc.)
• Each person must use the structure on the board to say a sentence
• grammar must be correct
• statements must be true, logical, and responsive

• All the sentences in the handout are REAL sentences written by students learning Chinese.
• Each sentence or passage has at least one grammar or character mistake. (Total number of mistakes in parentheses)

Telephone (打电话)

• Each teams forms into a line facing the board (at least 6 people per team)
• The teacher gives the first player a message. Go to the back of the line and WHISPER it to the ear of the second person in the line, and so on.
• When the last player is reached, announce the message (*CHALLENGE: or write it on the board*).
• Whichever team’s final message is most accurate wins! (Disqualified if the team is too loud)

TONE Bingo (发音宾果 bīn guǒ)!

With a partner or team, compete to fill out the bingo board. Whoever gets all the words in a row (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) first wins!

Fill in words by correctly pronouncing the tones! One person per word, take turns.

If you get the tones wrong, the other person or team goes. (The other person/team will check your pronunciation.)

CHALLENGE: also say a sentence with the word

Perfect (完美=wán měi) Tones!

• READ ALOUD a reading passage (i.e. the textbook dialogue, or the reading mastery challenges on CLQ).
• Play in TEAMS: each person reads one sentence
• See who can go the longest with PERFECT TONES! (zero mistakes)
• Continue reading until you make a mistake, then it’s the next team’s turn.
• Start the entire passage over if you make a mistake :)

LISTENING

DRAW the Picture (Pairs)

• STAND UP in pairs... BACK TO BACK!
• One person looks at the picture on the main board and describes it to her partner.

• Absolutely no looking or gesturing either way. Only describe the picture solely using Chinese.

READING

Story Skit (故事表演)

• In small groups of 2-4, read the story together. Make sure that you understand what the story is about!
• Write a skit to “act out” the story. You have 30 minutes.
• Assign roles, write dialogue, etc.
• One person should introduce the story (title, etc.)
• Practice and memorize your skit! (don’t make too complex)
• Perform your skit in front of the class (no notes aloud, can use props or pictures to help others understand story!)

Perfect (完美=wán měi) Reading!

• In teams, take turns reading aloud a sentence or passage (i.e. from the Quizlet CLQ Superboss Reading Lists).
• Must read perfectly, with accurate pronunciation and tones for each character.
• If you make a mistake, start over.
• If anyone makes a mistake, start over from the first person!
• The goal is for every person to read perfectly.

Jigsaw Reading

1) You will be divided into groups. Each person in the group will read ONE section in the reading.

2) Memorize the important information in your reading. You will NOT have a chance to read it when you get back with your group.

3) Get back together with your group. Introduce the key information you read about in the specific section you were given. (Each person has a different section.)

4) As a group, write down a summary of the key information in the entire reading, based on your discussion.

5) I will ask one group to introduce their summary to the class. See how close your information is to the actual reading!

• You have five minutes to try to write 50 characters or more.
• It may be challenging to get to this word count at first, but you can get faster with practice!
• Write about whatever you want… (but it’s a good idea to pick one topic to focus on)

• Write in Chinese on the given topic, OR free write.
• Incorporate at least 5 new and/or challenging grammar structures.

• Everyone has a slip of paper with different questions on it (or words/structures)
• Go around and talk about different topics
• When you’re finished discussing your word and/or question, go get some more from the pile! (Or switch slips)
• Find questions or structures that are interesting and/or challenging!

Interview (采访 = cái fǎng)

• Using the whiteboard, write down an interview question to ask.
• The interview question should be based on the given topic or grammar structure ( you can just copy it, OR customize it to write your own!)
• Interview as many people as you can (at least 5)!
• Challenge: Write down their names and answers on the whiteboard.

Conversation Circle (面对面之圈)

• Get into a double circle facing each other
• Talk about the conversation prompt on the board with your partner.
• When music starts playing (transition signal), each circle moves in opposite directions! When the music stops face your new partner.
• Start a new conversation using the new prompt!

杀人游戏 (shā rén yóu xì = Mafia)

• Four ROLES:
• Judge (法官): host of the game.
• Killers (杀手): kill all Farmers (or outnumber them).
• Police (警察): find and accuse all the Killers!
• Civilian (平民): help the Police find/accuse the Killers.
• During NIGHT, the Killers secretly “murder” one person, then the Police “inspect” one person to see if he’s a Killer.
• During DAY, everyone votes to eliminate a Killer suspect.
• The game ends when all the Killers are eliminated or if the Killers equal everyone else combined.

“大风(fēng)吹(chuī):” The Wind Blows

• This is Chinese “musical chairs”
• One less chair than the number of players
• The standing player is the Ghost. She says “大风吹！”, then makes a true/false statement
• i.e. “喜欢学习中文的人”
• Everyone for which that statement is true must find a new seat!
• The next standing player repeats as the Ghost, and so on

Ten Questions! 十个问题

• Chinese Guessing Game!
• Pick a topic (classroom stuff, people, food, clothing, locations, geography, etc.)
• Person A picks ONE word in that topic
• Person B asks yes/no questions to guess the word
• BONUS: put on a tight question limit (i.e. 5 questions).
• Take turns after you finish!

DESCRIBE the Picture (Teams)

• Work together to describe the picture on the board!
• One team member draws the picture, but CANNOT look at it.
• The other team members have to describe the picture to the drawer (no English, no hand gestures)
• The most accurate drawing wins!
