Materials Needed:

Print of a set of Subitizing Cards from Canvas (a few cards are already in the powerpoint but you will want to print out a set)

Ten Frames

Counters

Directions: Show students the dot card and have them represent the quantity on a ten frame.

Mathematics Ideas to Highlight:

Count objects up to 20 in a variety of arrangements (transition to dot cards, ten frames, dominos, and other representations)

Tell "how many" objects are in a group in a variety of arrangements.

Show the correct number of objects when I am told a number up to 20.

Show the correct number of objects, when told a number, in different arrangements.

Questions to ask:

How did you see (amount on the subitizing card)?

Show us how you counted the dots.

Is that how many counters you have placed on your ten frame?

What to look for:

Students who can transfer a representation of dots to a ten frame accurately.

1:1 correspondence when rote counting

accurate counting of dots/counters
