Health Clinics

Flying Samaritans at UCLA

• monthly clinic trips to Mexico
• can volunteer in vitals, triage, or pharmacy (w/o tech license!)
• biweekly pharmacy committee meetings

Other Health Clinics

Fish: volunteers travel to nations such as Mexico, Honduras, Romania, and the Philippines to run medical clinics, assist local healthcare professionals, conduct public health surveys, and improve local medical and social institutions.

Global Brigades: improve quality of life in under resourced communities through nine skill-based programs in countries such as Ghana and Nicaragua.

Happy Feet: UCLA podiatrists and UCLA medical students join to aid the homeless community in a foot clinic that the Happy Feet Clinic hosts twice a quarter. Undergraduate students work alongside them to provide homeless a soothing foot wash and get to shadow the entire process as the podiatrists and medical students administer foot exams.

Memo: medical, education missions and outreach. Serve underprivileged communities through medicine and education.

MAPS:Measuring to Achieve Patient Safety. Conduct patient safety observations at Ronald Reagan Hospital https://uclamaps.wordpress.com/apply/

ARC medical program: A program which enforces CI-CARE within the hospital through surveys. This allows for one-on-one interaction with the patients and families

Stroke Force/stroke team:Become a research associate for the RRH ER to determine if a stroke is suspected. Can also learn about new drugs, prevention, pre-clinical research, and trials

SCOPE: Students for Community Outreach, Promotion and Education

• Focus: to improve the health of children and families by exposing them to community resources
• Resource Desk: connecting patients with community resources
• Fitness and Nutrition: teaching elementary school classrooms
• YEP: mentorship with elementary kids

RESEARCH

• UCLA is a research university and is highly acclaimed for all of the research the faculty, graduate and undergraduate students
• Apply what you learn as a student into something you are interested learning more about
• Research allows you to think critically, creatively, and be patient (& more!)
• Is it required that you do research to get into pharmacy school?
• NO! But having such skills in critical thinking and being able to apply knowledge you gain from your studies are big perks!

RESEARCH

• Decide your interests : clinical vs wet lab
• topics that seem interesting to you (from what you learn in class to things you learn off the internet!)
• Get started using Undergraduate Research SRP (http://www.ugresearchsci.ucla.edu/srppositions.htm)
• Alternatively, can browse through faculty, read about their studies
• most labs have their own websites!
• Personally email the Professor/PI to express your interest and see if there are any available positions
• Cover letter stating why you are interested and what you can learn and bring into the lab
• resume and schedule for the quarter

RESEARCH

• Make sure you have a CV/Resume ready (attach in email)
• Interview
• SRP 99 and 199 (get 2-4 units per quarter!)
• Research requires time commitment and lots of work. Make sure it’s a lab environment you’re interested in!
• Some labs also offer work study!
