INITIAL THOUGHTS

  • Originally, I had a narrow understanding of what the term technology meant and what it actually applied to.
  • I thought of it only in terms of digital technologies such as phones, computers, and other electronics.
  • I knew it was going to be a rich and generative term because of how immersed society and reliant society has become on it

INVESTIGATING THE TERM

Techne: “art, skill, craft, or the way, manner, or means by which a thing is gained”

Logos: “word, the utterance by which inward thought is expressed, a saying, or an expression”

Definition: words or discourse about the way things are gained.

Examples: politics and art

GREEK ROOTS

German engineers coin the term “technic” meaning the “totality of tools, machines, systems and processes used in the practice arts and engineering.”

Intersects with the Industrial Revolution and begins to refer to machinery and other inventions.

Examples: telegraph, steam engine, telephone

19TH CENTURY

1950s-1970s: the Digital Revolution occurs and technology evolves from mechanics and analog to digital, and this is where we see computers emerge.

MID 20TH CENTURY

“The application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry.”�
