What is a marine trail?

A Marine Trail is a network of launch sites, day use, safety stops and campsites that facilitates safe travel along its length. Recently, our safety mandate criteria was accepted by and approved by the Coast Guard through the Ministry of Fisheries, Oceans and the Coast Guard.

First Nations Engagement

Our engagement work protects sensitive First Nations traditional land.

Our Code of Conduct reinforces and supports this work.

  • We are currently engaged with 45 Nations.
  • We have approval to display 689 campsites, day use sites and other types of sites.
  • We have closed or removed 124 sites from our map, which has cultural or archaeological significance.

Our Engagement

Impact

  • Our First Nations engagement builds relationships between First Nations peoples and a paddling/boater community. This advances reconciliation and mutual respect.
  • We have shared interests of safety, protection and education.
  • Working together leads to other opportunities.

Our recent work with the Mamalilikulla, Huu-ay-aht and other Nations has helped us create safe and contiguous trails in the Broughtons and the West Coast of Vancouver Island.

Established programs:

  • Coastal Caretakers – lending your VOICE (Visit, Observe, Interact, Caretaking, Evaluation).
  • Public Education – Introduction of our Code of Conduct. We introduced a special sticker to place on rental boats to target 3 main behaviours.
  • Collaborative Cleanups - Vargas Island, Gerald Island and other locations. World Ocean Week (Beg Islands, Raft Cove, Saanich Inlet, etc.)

Impact

Protecting our Coast is part of our three-pillar philosophy. A strong stewardship mandate supports our efforts to create safe and contiguous trails and our work in First Nations engagement.

  • Coastal Caretakers businesses and individuals are actively reporting on the condition of BC’s coastline through our SCR App.
  • Our well-researched Code of Conduct underlies all of our programs. Through our CofC sticker program, hundreds of new paddlers know at least three key behaviours.
  • Our Collaborative Cleanup work ensures pristine beaches are regenerative.

Safe, Contiguous Marine Trails

Sites by type visible on our map

Our Trails Development committee and volunteers are tasked with three key jobs:

  • Maintaining our data and maps
  • Conducting coastal site assessments in prioritized areas
  • Closing gaps on our marine trails.

Impact

  • We are respectfully gaining sites and closing gaps in marine trails along the entire BC coast.
  • Safe distances between sites help keep paddlers safe.
  • More sites are available for recreational use.
  • Our work encourages regenerative tourism.

We additionally manage or participate in the management of 13 recreation sites, 3 recreation reserve sites, 2 BC Parks sites, and one park-to-be.
