Building Strong Readers

At Home

Tips for Building Strong Readers at Home:

04

  • Make time for reading every day
    • Even 15–20 minutes a day makes a big difference. Set aside quiet time before bed or after homework for reading.
  • Let them choose what they like
    • Magazines, comics, graphic novels, audiobooks, or sports articles, it all counts! Letting your child choose helps build a love for reading.
  • Talk about what they’re reading
    • Ask questions like:• “What’s the most interesting thing you read today?”• “Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?”
  • Read together when you can
    • Take turns reading pages, or listen to audiobooks together on a drive or while doing chores.
  • Celebrate progress, not just levels
    • Praise your child for trying new genres, finishing a book, or asking questions. Reading is about growth, not just grades.

Consejos para Desarrollar Buenos Lectores en Casa:

04

At MS302, we’re helping students grow as confident readers by:

  • Teaching reading strategies like finding the main idea, using context clues to infer unfamiliar words, and asking and answering questions
  • Encouraging students to make connections between what they read and their own lives, other texts, or current events
  • Using i-Ready and classroom assessments to set personal reading goals
  • Providing small group instruction based on student needs
  • Giving students clear strategies they can use both in school and at home, like rereading for understanding, annotating the text with a purpose, and discussing what they’ve read.
  • Encouraging reading time in all classes, not just ELA.

Families can support this at home by asking open-ended questions like:

  • “What was the most important part of what you read today?”
  • “What do you think the author wanted you to learn?”
  • “What surprised you in the text?”
  • “Did anything remind you of something in your life?”

9 of 46

What is Title I?

Title I is a federal education program under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

It provides financial assistance to local educational agencies and schools with high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families.

The funding is specifically designed to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards and receive a high-quality, equitable education regardless of their socioeconomic background.

43 of 46

Key Components & Goal of Title I

The primary goal of Title I is to provide supplemental instructional services and activities that support students in meeting rigorous state academic standards.

Key components include conducting comprehensive needs assessments, implementing evidence-based schoolwide reform strategies, ensuring instruction is delivered by highly qualified teachers, and building strong family engagement programs.

Schools must develop a targeted, strategic plan to improve student achievement using these specific funds.
