Welcome to Energy Technologies Area!

  • Safety is our priority. It must be an integral part of everything we do at ETA.
  • This presentation will give a brief overview of safety requirements for new personnel working in non-laboratory areas such as offices.
  • Further information will be made available through online training courses.

Work Planning and Control

  • Work Activities have been established for personnel working in office areas.
  • Work Activities identify the hazards and required controls of the specific work being performed.
  • You will be assigned to one or more Work Activities. An email notification with link will be sent.
  • Access “Activity Manager” to review and accept your Work Activity assignment prior to starting work.

Safety Training

  • Safety training requirements are determined through the Work Activity you are assigned to.
  • All courses should be completed within 30 days.
  • Go to the Berkeley Lab Training website to access on-line training courses and classroom training course registration.
  • Training reminders with link are sent to your LBNL email account. Regularly check for these messages!

Ergonomics

  • Make sure your work area is setup properly and you have needed equipment.
  • You are required to complete an online ergonomic self-assessment by going to: EHS0059 Ergonomic Self-Assessment
  • If needed, request an ergonomic evaluation by going to: LBNL Ergonomic Website
  • If you are experiencing discomfort, don’t wait. Let your supervisor know right away!

Safety Walk Through

  • Your supervisor will give you a brief walkthrough of your work area. Make sure you are familiar with the following:
    • Locations of emergency equipment such as fire extinguisher.
    • Locations of phones and fire alarm pull stations.
    • Building evacuation routes and building evacuation assembly area.
  • If you are not sure about something- ASK

  • A New Hire Safety Checklist is available to assist you and your supervisor in your safety orientation at ETA.

Accident Reporting

  • Report all work related accidents to Health Services at the Building 26 Health Services Clinic or by calling X6266.
  • For life threatening emergencies, immediately call 911.
  • Let your supervisor know about the accident as soon as possible.
  • All accidents should be reported no matter how minor they may at first seem.
  • Report accidents promptly. Don’t wait until the injury gets worse!
  • Immediately report ANY electrical shock by calling 911. Report to Health Services for a medical evaluation.

Emergency Procedures

  • For life threatening emergencies, call 911.
    • Includes: ambulance, any fire, police
  • For all other emergencies, call X6999 for assistance.
    • Includes: odors, chemical spills, minor injuries, etc.
  • Know your building evacuation routes and evacuation assembly area.
  • Know where emergency equipment is located. This includes fire extinguishers and fire alarm pull stations.

  • Serious Injuries
  • Electrical Shock

All Other Emergencies: X6999

All Injuries and Electrical Shocks Must Be Evaluated Immediately at Health Services Located at Bldg. 26 (510-486-6266)

Always notify your Supervisor after reporting an emergency

Building Evacuation

  • Building evacuation maps are posted in all ETA building lobbies.
  • In the event of fire alarm, immediately evacuate the building.
  • Evacuate immediately.
  • Walk, do not run.
  • Do not use elevators.
  • Report to the building emergency assembly area.
  • Do not leave the assembly area unless instructed to do so.

Earthquake

  • In the event of an earthquake:
    • Drop, cover, and hold
    • After shaking stops, evacuate building
    • Take car keys and small personal items with you
    • Do not use elevators
    • Report to your building emergency assembly area
    • Do not attempt to re-enter buildings until deemed safe
