4. To help students save time, save money, and get smarter in order to improve the overall return on educational investment

5. To give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together

6. To help create a world where you can belong anywhere and where people can live in a place, instead of just traveling to it

7. To refresh the world in mind, body and spirit; To inspire moments of optimism and happiness through our brands and actions; To create value and make a difference

8. To empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more

9. To build a human co-experience platform that enables billions of users to come together to play, learn, communicate, explore and expand their friendships

Hint: 5-6 tech companies, 2-3 non-tech, 1 not-company

  • Organizations can have positive and lofty goals, but:
    • Also overemphasize them to attract talent (you!) and customers
    • Businesses (and non-profits!) need money ($$)
  • Companies can make money by:
    • Selling products and services at a profit
    • Connecting buyers and sellers for a % of the $
    • Selling advertising

  • You have to decide if your job/team/company/product aligns with your values and the impact you want to have
    • Company mission statement may not be much guidance
    • Do your homework!
  • My goal is not to “bash” these companies/organizations
    • I’ve personally used almost all of them
    • I am poking a little fun at their mission statements vs. their core business model to make a point
    • Healthy skepticism
